This Discover Channel documentary is a dramatization with narration of the tragedy of the crew of the Whaling Ship Essex. In 1820 nature struck back when an 85-foot whale rammed and sunk the ship. The survivors aboard their little rowing boats faced 90 days of dehydration, starvation, madness, death, and for the survivors’ cannibalism. The story inspired Herman Melville to write “Moby Dick” and in many ways the true story is more haunting and far grimmer than the world famous novel that has become a part of the collective unconscious of humanity.

Artisan Family Home Entertainment presents “Moby Dick: The True Story” in a good looking 16 by 9 widescreen aspect ratio with a clear digital quality Stereo Soundtrack. The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.

This is an excellent companion to Artisan’s 1998 DVD release of the TV miniseries remake of “Moby Dick,” which starred Patrick Stewart and is available on DVD-Video now.
