Golden Globe Award® Winning Actor Tony Shalhoub is one of the most versatile actors on both the big and small screens. This actor has appeared in a variety of feature films that include “Gattacca,” “Galaxy Quest,” “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” and both “Men In Black” films and that is just scratching the surface. I don’t know Mr. Shalhoub personally, but I greatly admire his work and am very happy he is getting the recognition he deserves from playing the title character of the acclaimed hit TV series “Monk.” “Monk” has been so popular that the ABC broadcast television network started airing reruns after the first season ran on the USA Network.

For those not yet familiar with the show, Tony Shalhoub plays the title role of Adrienne Monk, a brilliant detective who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, which had cost him his job as a homicide detective on the San Francisco Police Department. Since his wife’s tragic and still unsolved murder, Monk’s condition has worsened to include phobias that include fear of germs, heights, crowds, and just about everything else. Thus for Monk to solve his crimes as a private detective, he has to overcome great obstacles other people might take for granted on a day-to-day basis. Fortunately he has the companionship of his Nurse Sharona, (Bitty Schram), who accompanies him on his investigations, which often bring him into conflict with his former police Captain played by Ted Levine.

This season Monk continues to investigate baffling, seemingly impossible crimes including: the murder of the world’s oldest man, a victim who apparently drowned in mid-air while parachuting, and a string of murders committed by a man in a coma.

The second season premiere episode “Mr. Monk Goes Back To School” has Monk going undercover as a substitute high school teacher to determine whether a teacher’s fall from a clock tower was really a suicide, or a homicide. Andrew McCarthy guest stars as a particularly smarmy and adversarial schoolteacher suspect. The opening episode mixes the same amount of character drama and humor with not so much a “who done it” as a how did it really happen? A solid opening for what should be another fascinating season of the most original detective show on television. The second premiere of “Monk” will debut on the USA Network on Friday, June 20, 2003, at 10pm (ET/PT) and “Monk” fans take note, the series premiere is coming to DVD on Tuesday, June 24, 2003.
