The premise of “National Treasure” has Nicolas Cage along with a few companions searching for a lost treasure so great the Knights of Templar through the Free Masons hid it in America because they felt it was too great for any one person to control. Of course there is another group searching to find the treasure for there own greedy needs and the FBI is chasing them all because the map that holds the key to finding the treasure happens to be behind the Declaration of Independence, which Cage’s group has stolen. “National Treasure” is a popcorn feature with action, adventure, and a bit of humor complete with a signature slick look from Producer Jerry Bruckheimer. If you are looking to just sit back and accept the silliness for what it is, “National Treasure” is a fun film that should satisfy action film fans looking for something a little different. The film is extremely predictable and at times laughable if you scrutinize it even slightly so don’t bother and just enjoy it for what it is.
The anamorphic widescreen image has been modified from the original (2.35:1) theatrical aspect ratio that is present on the DVD counterpart to a (1.78:1) picture that fills the screen completely. Since Buena Vista Home Entertainment has released other films on UMD with the same (2.35:1) aspect ratio that the DVD counterparts, I find it curious as to why they chose to modify the image for this film in particular? The film still looks great, but I think even with the small viewing size of the screen of the PSP, the studio should have released the film on UMD with the same aspect ratio as the widescreen DVD and then let the PSP user choose to magnify the image if they find it to be too small. A rousing English Stereo Soundtrack that kicks up the action a few notches is included along with a French Language Stereo Soundtrack and English Subtitles encoded onto the UMD as options too. While none of the DVD extra value features are included on the UMD version, there is an optional text commentary track that can be read while watching the film and bonus preview trailers for “The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe”, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, and “Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl.” The menus are animated to represent the multicolored lenses Cage’s character uses to discover clues in the film and they feature full motion scene selections too. “National Treasure” is available now on UMD-Video for the Sony PSP at retailers on and offline courtesy of Walt Disney Home Entertainment.
