Based on characters created by and a story by Tim Burton, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is the rare fantasy film that actually caters to two holidays at once. You can watch it for Halloween or Christmas. Danny Elfman provides the music and lyrics for the film that tells the fairy tale of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who discovers the winter cheer of Christmas quite accidentally when he stumbles through a magical doorway into Christmas Town. Despite their appearances, the citizens of Halloween Town are not evil. In fact they are all excited about the possibilities celebrating Christmas might bring, but they just don’t understand it. Much the way the Adams Family might see macabre things as being beautiful and fun, Jack Skellington just wants to be Santa Clause with his own spooky take on gift giving and unwittingly puts Santa Claus and both magical worlds in danger at the hands of Oogie Boogie, the only truly malevolent being in Halloween Town.

The (1.66:1) aspect ratio presentation looks gorgeous on the widescreen LCD display of Sony’s PSP. The colors just jump out at the viewer and film like this absolutely benefits from having an external docking source or converter to bring the clear Stereo Soundtrack and remix it into a remarkable Dolby Surround Soundtrack. In absence of such a device, viewers should then use the ear buds provided with their PSP since the tiny stereo speakers on the Sony PlayStation Portable’s face are just too low to do a film like this any justice. Personally any UMD I screen and review is always docked on Dreamgear’s “I’ Sound Pro” set to surround output and until I can test a product that beats the functionality of it, I am sticking with my recommendation for this product as a companion for UMD for PSP s.  English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded onto the UMD as options too.

The interactive menus are fully animated with motion scene selections and are easy to navigate. The bonus materials were originally a part of the deluxe laserdisc release from the mid 1990s as well as the subsequent DVD release and these materials include a behind-the-scenes making of documentary and deleted and storyboarded sequences that were never animated featuring comments by Director Henry Selick. In total there are four deleted scenes, including one where stop motion vampires are playing hockey with Tim Burton’s animated head. The four storyboarded sequences include an alternate reveal of who the identity of Oogie Boogie could have been. These deleted and never animated scenes feature temp music at times as well. The complete and uncut version of Tim Burton’s early film “Frankenweenie” is presented in a gorgeous black and white (1.33:1) aspect ratio. Trailers for “The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe”, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, and “Dark Water” conclude the bonus materials included on this UMD for PSP.
