It has been a while, but Lawrence
Holland, creator of “Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe” and the “X-Wing”
series has now bought through LucasArts Entertainment Company and Totally Games
the intense air combat extravaganza “Secret Weapons Over Normandy.” This is
a combat simulation and not a standard just point and fire type of game along
the lines of “Rebel Assault,” but it does not require training missions to
get the hang of, especially if you are familiar with these sorts of games. 1st
or 3rd person point of view provide the player with his or her
preferred line of sight as the player begins in the Hawker Hurricane Mk. I and
gradually as the game progresses new planes are unlocked along with new
capabilities for more challenging missions. 16 planes are listed in the
documentation, which is very well written and easy to follow, but there are 23
authentic aircraft including the P51Mustang and the B-17 heavy bomber to take
into historic WWII air battles in 12 realistic environments. This surprise was
revealed last week, but just in case you do not know here is an excerpt from the
press release from LucasArts.
Upon
completing the Secret Weapons Over Normandy 15-mission campaign and all 21
"Challenge" missions, skilled pilots will be rewarded with these two
memorable starships that are available for use in the game's "Instant
Action" mode. Console players will also be able to fly a squadron of
X-wings head-to-head against their friend's TIE Fighters in split-screen
multiplayer mode. In addition to the realistic look and authentic Star Wars
sound effects direct from the Skywalker Sound library, players will also enjoy
details such as watching the head of the X-wing's astromech droid track nearby
targets. Pilots can learn more about Secret Weapons Over Normandy at the
official product website: www.overnormandy.com.
The
graphics are terrific on Windows based PCs as well as the Microsoft Xbox and
Sony PlayStation 2, but I think the game console versions are a bit easier and
of the three I preferred the Xbox release, which can be used with “Xbox
Live” high speed internet service. The PC version comes on four CD-ROMs and I
encountered some difficulty loading it. While I find the traditional flight
joystick to be the best way to play these games, the use of the keyboard and
mouse can be somewhat cumbersome in conjunction with the joystick. There are a
few recognizable guest voices that lend their vocal talents to the game. They
include Claudia Christian (Babylon 5) Mako (Conan The Barbarian), and Phil
Proctor.
“Secret
Weapons Over Normandy” is available on CD-ROM for Windows and DVD-ROM for the
Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation 2 at retailers on and offline now from
LucasArts Entertainment Company.
