Shot
on video, “People From Space” is a comic spoof of particular low budget
horror film where a few young people get lost in the woods leaving behind their
video documents as the only clues to what their fate might have been and
subsequently that film became the sleeper hit of the summer of 1999. “People
From Space” was shot in 3 days and completed for shoestring budget of only
$7000 dollars. The cast adlibbed the film which was shot in sequence and
documents the strange odyssey into the woods of two couples who are searching
for proof of a crashed alien spaceship hoping to collect a $100,000 dollar
reward for finding it. Along the way they encounter a few strange characters and
bizarre elements that include a tree with sprouting sex toys, mysterious orgasm
inducing vibrations, some rude Morse code, some strange locals, a phone booth in
the middle of a dense forest, and bright flashing lights.
The
film is played straight faced and dry along the lines of “Waiting For Guffman”
though I found the humor a bit easier to grasp here. Presented in a letterboxed
(1.85:1) aspect ratio, “People From Space” looks pretty good considering,
but don’t expect the digital video clarity of some more recent features
because like computers, the technology of anything digital, including video,
quadruples every few months if not less. The English Stereo Soundtrack is clear
and free of any unintentional background noise and Writer, Director, and Star
Marc Berlin and Co-Star Cindy Klayman also provide a humorous feature length
audio commentary that is screen specific and actually quite articulate.
There
is a short gallery of production stills included as well and the interactive
menus are standard still frames that are easy to navigate. No film will cater to
everyone’s taste, but for those who like independent comedies done with some
wit and a bit of charm, “People From Space” is definitely an amusing film
worth checking out and is available on DVD-Video now from Elite Entertainment.
