Based
her two of her short fiction stories with one extra written especially for the
screen, Rebecca Miller’s “Personal Velocity” stars Kyra Sedgwick, Parker
Posey, Fairuza Balk in three separate stories related by a theme and subtle
references where we see three very different women faced with life changing
choices that could be the beginning of a new start or the repeat of the same
mistake. There are no easy or clean-cut endings so the viewer decides what will
happen, which lends the film to discussion. Kyra Sedgwick, Parker Posey, Fairuza
Balk each cast a spell on the viewer with some of their finest screen
performances of their careers.
Shot
on consumer digital video cameras and transferred to film, “Personal
Velocity” has a grainy cinema vertite look that is appropriate to the style of
the film with an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) presentation and a discrete and
well rounded English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack coupled with optional
English Captions and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired and French,
Spanish, and Portuguese Language Subtitles. A pan and scan (1.33:1) version of
the film is also encoded onto the dual layered DVD as a viewing option. Extra
features include a technical commentary with Cinematographer Ellen Kuras and
Gaffer John Nadeau, a Director’s Commentary, and an “In Conversation”
featurette (30:10) with Director Rebecca Miller and Parker Posey and Fairuza
Balk as well as videotaped comments by Kyra Sedgwick, who was unable to attend
the discussion in person. A behind-the-scenes featurette (14:08) and a choice of
(1.85:1) or (1.33:1) presentation of the theatrical trailer (2:10) and home
video trailers for “When Harry Met Sally: Special Edition” (1:40), “The
Silence Of The Lambs Special Edition” (: 32), and the three 007 Box Sets
featuring “Die Another Day” (1:32) conclude the extra features on this DVD
release.

menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“Personal Velocity” will debut on DVD on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Home Entertainment and is well worth a look.
