“If
man is 5 then the devil is 6 and if the devil is 6 than God is 7.” These are
paraphrased lines from one of my favorite Pixies songs “Monkey Gone To
Heaven” and I can honestly say that I haven’t clue as to what they are
supposed to mean, but I still like them. I remember hearing the Pixies on Long
Island’s WDRE, which was also known as WLIR in the 1980s. It was the only
radio station I listened to in my last years of high school and through most of
my undergraduate years in college. I am not a huge fan of the Pixies, but
somehow I managed to catch them live three times. They opened for Love &
Rockets and The Cure in an outdoor venue somewhere in New Jersey during the
summer of 1989. Then in 1990 I saw them open up for Midnight Oil at Radio City
Music Hall. Finally I caught them again in 1992 opening for U2 at Madison Square
Garden. Pixies are notable for their mix of catchy guitar riffs and for the
vocals of Frank Black, who can scream into the microphone with such emotion that
one almost feels like they are being stunned and yet the vocals by Kim Deal adds
a much needed feminine touch that lends to the bands eclectic mix of light
alternative rock and punk sound. Although the band started with a largely male
audience in the late 1980s, by 2004 a very strong percentage of female fans
packed their concerts too and giving the band a greater crossover appeal. The
concert recorded in Belfort, France during the bands 2004 reunion tour is
presented in a clear 16 by 9 enhanced widescreen aspect ratio with a choice of
thrashing English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Linear PCM Stereo 48/16
Sound. Bonus tracks included on the DVD are presented in English Dolby Stereo
Sound. Among the 27 concert tracks are noteworthy performances of “River
Euphrates”, “Monkey Gone To Heaven”, “Levitate Me”, “Velouria”,
“Here Comes Your Man”, “Where Is My Mind?” and “Gigantic.”
The
15 bonus tracks were recorded at various venues and feature optional interview
clips before each song that when watched collectively gives the viewer an
additional 58 minutes and 26 seconds of material on top of the concert already
present on the DVD. A multi-angle feature that enables the viewer to switch
between six different camera angles while watching another live performance of
“Monkey Gone To Heaven” (2:49) is included too.
