After
watching “The Adventures Of Pluto Nash” I had to shut off my DVD player and
clear my mind. “The Adventures Of Pluto Nash” came at the end of the summer
after a delayed theatrical release and is now coming to DVD-Video courtesy of
Warner Brothers. Eddie Murphy plays “Pluto Nash,” a former smuggler and
hustler turned club owner on the moon circa 2087. Mobsters are muscling in on
Nash’s “Club Pluto” and will send him into orbit if he doesn’t give in.
With the help of an aspiring singer (Rosario Dawson), his robot bodyguard (Randy
Quaid), his no nonsense mother (Pam Grier), and the local crooner (Jay Mohr),
Pluto will prove why he is the man on the moon.
“The
Adventures Of Pluto Nash” is about as bad a film as they come, but
unfortunately the film isn’t even bad enough to make it good. Murphy is still
charming and Dawson has a sweet nature about her and from seeing her in other
film and television roles, I know she is a capable and developing young actress.
The special effects look fine with a slight retro if not cartoon quality to
them. Unfortunately none of it can cover up a bad script.
Never
the less Warner Home Video has done an amiable job with “The Adventures Of
Pluto Nash” on DVD with a clear anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) presentation
and a good English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix. A French Language Dolby
Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack along with English Captions and Closed Captions
for the hearing impaired and French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded on to
the DVD as options too.
Extra
features include four additional scenes (4:46) that can be watched individually
or as one reel, the IMx music video “Ain’t No Need” (3:41), and a making
of the music video featurettes (3:03) as well.
The (1.85:1) theatrical trailer (1:15) and select cast, writer, and
director highlights wrap up the DVD-Video features. Windows based PC users with
a DVD-ROM drive have access to InterActual enhanced web links. The menus are
standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
Perhaps
as a last minute stocking stuffer “The Adventures Of Pluto Nash” is worth a
look otherwise if you are still curious then rent it.
