Ron
Jeremy is among a handful of male porn stars that is recognizable to almost
anyone even if they have never seen a porn film in their entire life. Ron Jeremy
is beloved by men who see him as a pop culture hero because with the exception
of one endowment, he seems to be the most unlikely man to ever grace the blue
screen. He is overweight, not particularly handsome in a leading man sort of
way; he always looks like he is sweating, and he’s one hairy dude. Women love
Ron because he is Ron; no doubt being an internationally famous adult film star
has its perks. Ron Jeremy’s big claim to fame is the size of his penis, which
is approximately 9 ¾ inches long. I do not know Ron Jeremy personally so I
cannot honestly say what kind of a person he is, but this new DVD release
entitled “Porn Star: The Legend Of Ron Jeremy” attempts to give the viewer
as close an understanding of Ron’s character as anyone is likely to get.
Ron
Jeremy comes off somewhat enigmatic, but very honest in the documentary. He has
had sex with thousands of women off and on camera and has no shame to admit that
he has sucked his own penis on film early in his career and even did a porn film
where he had sex with a five hundred pound woman. He laments at times that as he
gets older, he will someday have to stop performing in x-rated features because
that is not the legacy he wishes to leave behind. Ron wants to be a legitimate
actor, but like some tragic character in a Greek play, his gift is also his
curse because besides the few people who will give him cameo scenes in his
films, the majority of the filmmaking world wants nothing to do with him. Is Ron
being discriminated against or are there other reasons? I think that the stigma
of performing in an adult film is one that lasts forever. Once you do it, you
can never undo it. However as charming as Ron might be to his friends, fans, and
costars, one has to ask if this man is really talented and from what the film
shows of Jeremy trying to be standup comedian, he’s terrible.
Interesting
tidbits regarding Ron’s background is that he has a Masters degree from Queens
College of the City University of New York, he taught Special Ed kids before
quitting and trying to become an actor, his mother was an employee of an early
incarnation of the CIA, and Ron is one of the wealthiest adult film stars still
working and also one of the cheapest, carrying bags instead of luggage and
whatnot. We get a glimpse at the real world of Ron’s profession with one girl
revealing in more ways than one that she is not thrilled to have to do a sex
scene with him. We also see women who have for their careers and others who
truly like Ron and even others that are proud to call him their friend. Ron’s
biggest problem is in reconciling his own duplicity. He is lonely, but he will
not get married, at least not until he falls in love, and he wants to be taken
seriously as an actor, but will not give up being an adult film star and he
would not give up being an adult film star for the love of another. Personally I
think the documentary is more sympathetic to Ron Jeremy than unbiased and for
what it’s worth I think Ron should make peace with his legacy and be happy he
has such a cult following and that there are people who will give him cameos and
if he’s lucky a character role because that is as good as it is ever going to
get and there are plenty of people in this world who suffer with a lot more than
trying to balance a career and a porn star and an actor.
Presented
in a combination of video and filmed excerpts from Ron’s many films, “Porn
Star: The Legend Of Ron Jeremy” is presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio with a
clear English Stereo Soundtrack. Ron Jeremy dominates the feature length audio
commentary track with Director Scott J. Gill and in the process removes the
possibility he might have had of gaining any sympathy. I think no one loves Ron
more than Ron. There are eleven deleted scenes that run between 41 seconds and 4
½ minutes each. The most interesting is Ron’s Lolita story.
There
are several trailers for other documentaries available on DVD from Docurama and
New Video as well as a listing of both the mainstream and adult films Ron has
appeared in and bios for the filmmakers and crewmembers. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Porn Star: The Legend Of
Ron Jeremy” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and off line.
