I
think a friend of mine who was alive and old enough to enjoy the scene that
existed in the latter half of the 1960s described both of these films best when
he remarked that “They were Hollywood’s interpretation of that period” and
I have to admit that after viewing these two films it appears he was exactly
right because the filmmakers pretty much say the same thing about their
respective films that occupy this new addition to MGM’s Midnight Movies
collection of films on DVD.
“Psych-Out”
is terrible with the principle actors all wearing wigs and it shows as we see
this silly exploitation film that would have been forgotten by most were it not
for MGM’s keen eye for bringing their vast catalogue of acquired releases from
various now defunct studio libraries and depending on the release and
circumstance, putting together some varied special feature DVD releases for a
modest sales price and this is no exception.
First
off, both films are presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratios
and both transfer feature good flesh tones, nice background details, a fine film
like quality presentation, and good color saturation without color bleeding.
Both feature clear English Two-Channel Monaural Soundtracks that are free of
analogue hissing, and background noise. “The Trip” also features a Spanish
Language Monaural Two-Channel Soundtrack and both films feature English Captions
and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired and French and Spanish Language
Subtitles as options.
Extra
features for “Psych-Out” include the “Love And Haight” featurette
(19:30) with interviews with the film’s Producer Dick Clark, Director Richard
Rush, DP Laslo Kovacs, and Actor Bruce Dern and the theatrical trailer in
(1.85:1) widescreen (2:48).
“The
Trip” features the “Tune In, Trip Out” featurette (17:14) with Director
Producer Roger Corman, who reveals he tried LSD because he figured if he was
going to make a movie about tripping on acid, he might as well see what the deal
is. Corman also delivers a thoughtful feature length audio commentary on the DVD.
A featurette on the optical effects to create the LSD trips (7:58) and an on
screen article from March 1968 issue of “American Cinematographer” as well
as a looping pseudo “Psychedelic Lightbox” (5:44), and the trailer (2:27)
wrap up the extra features on this DVD.
Menus
are standard interactive still fames that are easy to navigate. “Psych-Out & The Trip: MGM Midnight Movies: Double Feature” will
debut on DVD-Video with several other new additions to the “Midnight Movies”
collection on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 from Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Home
Entertainment.
