By taking three story paradigms inspired from classic crime and noir fiction and intercutting them into three related stories presented out of a linear time sequence, Quentin Tarantino managed to produce a film that pleased both the art house and mainstream cinema audiences and was also more ambitious than his previous film “Reservoir Dogs.” “Pulp Fiction” was and is very much a character driven epic of sorts that managed to hold on to the stage play like quality people enjoyed in “Reservoir Dogs” while redefining contemporary films for an entire generation.

The buildup for “Pulp Fiction” was huge. I remember hearing rumors from friends in my grad school classes months before the film opened and then afterwards I remember sitting in my grad classes and all I could hear in one form or another was either girls talking about “Pulp Fiction” or guys talking about Tarantino and vice versa. The film was truly an event picture that even after more than ten years has still not lost the spark of artistry that has made the film as contemporary in 2005 as it was in 1994. Not so much a time capsule as it is just a timeless anthology, “Pulp Fiction” won numerous awards including an Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay Written Directly For The Screen shared by Quentin Tarantino and story partner at the time, filmmaker Roger Avary.

Now Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Miramax Home Entertainment has released “Pulp Fiction” on UMD-Video for PSP so that fans can re-experience the action anywhere and anytime they want with privacy and portability. The UMD-Video presents “Pulp Fiction” in a (2.35:1) letterboxed aspect ratio with English Stereo Sound and English Captions for the hearing impaired encoded as an option. There are no extra value features on the UMD version so that the picture and sound quality are as good as possible. I found that remixing the sound artificially into a surround soundtrack made little to no difference in the overall sound quality of UMD. The picture is quite clear though the color saturation looked a bit muted. The interactive menus are great with the famous case with the two 666 combinations opening up as music from the film plays in the background. The menus also feature full motion scene selections across the hood of the red Chevy from the film.

If you are traveling and want to make a neat triple feature of Tarantino films to watch on your trip, “Pulp Fiction” on UMD is the perfect partner for the UMD releases of “Kill Bill Vol. 1” and “Kill Bill Vol. 2.” “Pulp Fiction” is available on UMD-Video for PSP now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Miramax and Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
