In
the last decade of the 21st Century, the U.S. military found itself
embroiled in a number of frontline engagements difficult to understand and
control. Brigades and battalions were unwieldy. Small commando teams often
proved clumsy. Spies were ineffectual. In reaction, the Joint Chiefs decided to
refine the tradition of small group operations stemming from the Rangers, Green
Berets, SEALs, and Delta Force, and try something radical: identity qualified
professionals and train them for one-man missions. The Radical Tactics Expert (RTX)
is an elite warrior trained by RADTAC to be a master of military improvisation
who operates alone. His job is to enter a conflict, evaluate the situation and
apply deadly force. This is commonly broken down into in three small words that
are indoctrinated into each RTX. The words are “See,” “Think,” and
“Act.”
RTX
Eugene Zeno Wheeler is called into battle on Mars circa 2103 A.D. He is a
bio-mechanically enhanced soldier with a steel arm capable several automated
functions that include a torque wrench, grappling hook, taser, plasma cutter,
and catapult. He also has a synthetic left eye that gives him an advanced
imaging system capable of extracting clues from the environment in four spectrum
modes that include infrared, naviscan, electroscan, and ultraviolet bioscan.
Wheeler has a robotic sidekick named IRIS, which interfaces with him. IRIS is
one of a common breed of portable computers that can assist with personal
organization and are regarded by many as friends. Wheeler’s features a strong
female personality. They work as a symbiotic being, which is a necessity on
Wheeler’s Martian mission.
Despite
centuries of fiction detailing the extraterrestrial invasion of Earth, it is
ironic that aliens, who have overrun a human colony, have invaded Mars. The
mission is to liberate the colony and drive the invaders off. The player takes
on the role of Wheeler in the game as he arrives on the Martian moon of Phobos
and from there go on to ten levels of gameplay that takes Wheeler and IRIS to
the surface of Mars where we explore a thermal research station, a diamond
mining facility, a water pump complex, a crater site, a power station, the Red
Rock Township where 200 colonists once lived, the hanger dock, a gas field and
more.
The
enemies are spider like light emitting demons that are armed with lasers and can
teleport squads into combat against our heroic RTX soldier. They have invisible
electromagnetic armor that absorbs battle damage and will chose suicide over
capture. They rarely travel alone and are deadly. Over the course of the game
the player will also encounter human survivors and various surprises and secrets
that not only relate to the alien invasion of Mars, but also relate to an
extraordinary geologic discovery as well as relate the Wheeler’s own past.
There
are various items one can pick up and use to conserve energy, increase
firepower, and complete the mission objectives. One can view their inventory by
pressing the “Select” button while other game controller features allow the
player to make Wheeler crouch behind objects, use his headcam to examine his
environment complete with the ability to zoom in on specific objects or
features. It is surprisingly simple to target multiple enemies and switch
weapons. The camera options enable a 360-degree examination of the battlegrounds
with an enhanced onscreen interface containing essential information on weapons,
items, utilities, recharge meter, ammunition count and meter, oxygen meter,
health meter, and jetpack status.
Vibration
control can be disabled and there is a choice between English Dolby Surround
Sound and Monaural Sound with optional English Captions. Special items are
unlocked as one progresses in the game and gains codes so that various levels
can be accessed later. An 8MB memory card with at least 250KB of space available
must be inserted into slot 1 in order to save one’s progress in the game and
come back to it later. The 30-page documentation insert is surprisingly easy to
follow and well designed and written. The graphics and sound are quite vibrant.
Overall “RTX Red Rock” is an engaging experience that is definitely worth
checking out. “RTX RED Rock” is available on DVD-ROM now for the Sony
PlayStation 2 Computer Entertainment System from LucasArts Entertainment Company
