Surprisingly
entertaining entry in the MTV “Real World You Never Saw” series on DVD
distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment in part because these kids are
having the time of their lives and seem less pretentious than previous “Real
World” casts. Basically what you get here is some footage that was supposedly
too explicit for MTV, but is still censored on DVD with blurred nudity. At least
the curse words are not bleeped out. It seems like everyone was sleeping with
someone anywhere they could with this cast, with implied bisexual threesomes and
a scene of two female cast members tongue kissing on a plane bound for
Australia, but if this was all the DVD had to offer I’d dismiss it. These kids
are actually interesting to watch and we see them interact in a lot of
misadventures whether it is the van with the key ignition from hell or the very
candid reactions one gets from their experience meeting a Marine who has more
quick ways to bring a person down without killing them than “Mr. Spock” or
just holding beautiful cuddly exotic animals in Australia.
It
is amusing to watch these kids too because it must be the first time I have ever
seen a “Real World” cast where there was not some bleak underpinning whether
it is the argument that nearly halts production. I think these kids were having
too much fun to ever get on each other’s nerves.
Presented
in the (1.33:1) videotaped aspect ratio used for broadcast, the image quality
appears fine and the English Dolby Stereo Soundtrack is less obtrusive than on
some entries from MTV. The program has 25 chapter stops although the insert
states there are 22. No captions or subtitles are encoded on to this DVD. Extra
features include snippets from the various cast member audition tapes that last
a little over a minute each, a tour of the suite where they lived (6:06) and
some bloopers (1:17).
The
interactive menus are easy to navigate. “The Real World You Never Saw: Las
Vegas: Confessions From Sin City: MTV’s DVD-Video Collection” will debut on
Tuesday, January 28, 2003 from Paramount Home Entertainment.
