Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the bayou comes “Red Water,” a new original popcorn TV movie making it’s world premiere on TBS on Sunday, August 17, 2003, at 8pm (ET/MT) 7pm (CT/PT). Lou Diamond Phillips plays a boat owner who lives and makes his living on his boat along the Louisiana bayou. Business has been bad since an oil company began drilling in the Bayou, killing most of the fish and harming the environment. A bull shark, which is the only known shark to be able to thrive in both salt and fresh water, has been targeting the locals. To complicate matters, two hit men infiltrate Phillips’ boat. Kristy Swanson plays Phillips’ ex-wife who works for the oil company. Coolio plays one of the hit men. The film suggests that the shark might be a manifestation of the bayou spirit’s anger at what is happening to the environment.

This is no “Jaws,” but is a better than the average made for TV thriller and while much of the action is predictable, there are still a few minutes here and there that yield surprises. Some of the effects look definitely above average for a TV movie too.
