This
past week the eagerly awaited audio-CD for the last film in George Lucas’
prequel trilogy entitled “Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith,”
which opens in theaters on May 19, 2005, was released at retailers on and
offline courtesy of Sony Classical. Besides the signature operatic score that
Williams has provided for the entire Star Wars Saga of feature films, this
soundtrack also includes the bonus DVD-Video “Star Wars: A Musical Journey,”
which justifies the cost of buying the soundtrack itself because more than
anything else, it really ties the entire film series together as a cohesive
whole. The DVD features optional hosted segments with Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine),
which I highly recommend viewing because he beautifully summarizes the action in
each music video. The videos as well as all of the content on the bonus DVD are
presented in beautiful anamorphic widescreen with a 16 by 9 aspect ratio. In
addition there sound and voice cues from all six feature films in the series and
of course viewers will be very excited to see the images from “Revenge Of The
Sith” primarily in chapter 5 “A Hero Falls.” The soundtrack on the bonus
disc is presented marvelously in either a full Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Soundtrack or CD quality PCM Stereo Sound. The interactive menus are well
rendered and easy to navigate. The cover of the bonus DVD features the image of
Darth Vader while the image on the CD is Darth Sidious.
Within
the single size two-disc CD jewel case is a foldout insert with some brief notes
by George Lucas as well as a pinup like mini-poster image on the other side.
Some have asked if the soundtrack was released in a keep case as well because of
the bonus DVD included. As far as I am aware, this is not the case. The audio CD containing John Williams’ score is among the
best of the prequel trilogy audio soundtracks released. One just imagines the
drama unfolding on the screen with such memorable tracks as “Anakin’s
Betrayal”(4:04) and “Anakin’s Dark Deeds” (4:05). “The Birth Of The
Twins And Padme’s Destiny” (3:37) contains some melancholy movements
that echo both the prequel and the classic trilogy. In fact the music from the
original trilogy is integrated nicely throughout and serves to fill in the gap
between the two feature film trilogies in ways that probably enhance the visuals
throughout and transcends them too. I have not yet attended a screening for the
new film so I can’t comment on that aspect exactly, but that is how I feel
based on listening to the score alone.
As
a whole, this is another must-own product for any Star Wars fan and in many ways
the DVD included is as important a part of the Star Wars Saga on home video as
owning all of the DVDs currently available. “Star
Wars: Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD
& Star Wars: A Musical Journey Bonus DVD” can be purchased at retailers on
and offline now courtesy of Sony Classical.
