“Ringu”
is the film “The Ring” was adapted from. Based on the novel “The Ring”
by Koji Suzuki, it details a videotape with strange images that compels the
viewer to watch and then after the tape plays itself out the viewer gets a
mysterious phone call informing them they have seven days to live. Sure enough
the viewer bites the dust and this compels a journalist to investigate the story
after her niece succumbs to an untimely death. The anti gets higher when her son
sees the tape thus motivating her to seek out the root of this phenomenon and
hopefully find salvation.
“Ringu”
in many ways is more streamlined and effective with some slight bits of humor
and genuine terror than the American counterpart. It is surprising to see just
how much the American version adapted from the original, which became an
international box office hit with sequels that have since followed. Another
interesting point of comparison is view how the images in the tape depicted in
“Ringu” are different from “The Ring” and what was translated for the
American remake. One could sense what culturally might be acceptable in one
country, but not in another as well as what is considered scary or disturbing to
view on an emotional, spiritual, and psychological level by people in a
different country, culture, and or society.
DreamWorks
Home Entertainment’s American DVD release of “Ringu” presents the film in
a beautiful anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio from an all-new high
definition digital master and includes a somewhat low, but still good Japanese
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound remix with optional English, French, and
Spanish, Language Subtitles. A Japanese Dolby Surround Soundtrack is also
included.
The
menus feature full motion scene selections and are easy to navigate. A (1.85:1)
trailer for “Catch Me If You Can” (2:26) with a full English Dolby Digital
5.1 Surround Soundtrack and home video trailers for “The Ring” (: 33) “8
Mile” (1:06) and “Empire” (1:06) are also included.
Definitely
worth seeing and a great companion for consumers who buy “The Ring,”
DreamWorks Home Entertainment will debut “Ringu” on DVD-Video day and date
with their DVD release of “The Ring” on Tuesday, March 4, 2003.
