The Rose is the
Story of a Janis Joplin like signer during the late 1960’s. Overwhelmed by the
demands of her manager, excesses of fame, booze, and drugs, she turns to a
stranger in hopes of finding some happiness only to find heartbreak and pain. I
will not kid you the film is a bit downer The ending scene will leave you in
tears and the haunting title song will leave you depressed for a week. But worth
it to see Bette’s performance. And who doesn’t like a good cry every now and
then anyway?
Oh
but what a performance it is. Now every one can now enjoy one of Bette’s most
bombastic performances ever put on screen. Fox has done a good job with the
transfer. Clear sharp colors and tones and enough raw sound to have your
speakers bouncing of there pedestals. Bette
Midler’s musical performance as the Rose is nothing less than a fireball of
pure energy. While her acting is…Wow! So sensitive and heart rendering. When I first saw this movie I became an instant fan of
Bette and
have continued to follow her film career to this day.
Included
on this disc is a commentary by Film director Mark Rydell. Mark discusses among
other things his desire to have Bette Midler for the role at least 15 years
before it ever went before the cameras as a biopic for Janis Joplin, but opted
for a Janis like story in order to expand the movies plot. He also talks about
story vs. special effects and how he feels movies have suffered story content in
lieu of special effects. There is not much else on this disc other than the
original theatrical trailer for “The Rose” as well as trailers for other Fox
titles “All
That Jazz,” “For The Boys,” “Marilyn The Diamond Collection,” “Sound
Of Music,” and “South Pacific.” It would have been nice to have a Bette
Featurette talking about her time doing the movie.
In closing I just would love to say Thanks again
Fox for releasing one of my favorite
