Love
them or hate them, the Ewoks first featured in “Star Wars: Episode VI: Return
Of The Jedi” not only played an important role in helping the Rebel Alliance
defeat the Galactic Empire, but they spawned two TV films that were released
theatrically abroad and an animated series that ran on Saturday mornings for two
seasons. These animated adventures are actually compilations of episodes from
the animated series produced as feature length stories in 1996 and 1997
respectively to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of “Star Wars” as
well as the 1997 theatrical release of the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition.
They appear to be recollections of Wicket regarding the lessons he and his Ewok
companions learned when they were very young, years before they had any contact
with human beings. The stories feature various indigenous creatures from the
Sanctuary Moon of Endor with some never before seen in the live action movies.
Creatures
like the Duloks and the evil Tulgah witch Morag create threats for the Ewoks in
these animated adventures designed for family viewing, but really more aimed at
very young kids between four and seven. The Ewoks are made to look very cute and
child friendly to a point where one cannot help but begin to see these stories
as if they some form of “Care Bears” on another world. One of the script
writers from the series, Bob Carrau, also penned the screenplay for the TV movie
“Caravan Of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.”
“The
Haunted Village” found on Side A of the DVD has an approximate running time of
86 minutes and 46 seconds while “Tales From The Endor Woods” included on
Side B has running length of approximately 88 minutes and 52 seconds. Both
stories are presented in a clear full screen (1.33:1) aspect ratio with English
Dolby Surround Sound and English Captions for the hearing impaired encoded as
options. There are no extra value materials, but the double feature disc is
available at bargain sales prices at retailers on and offline. The menus are
standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
