There
is no denying that the second season of “Sanford And Son” was better than
the first, but even through watching all 24 season four episodes, which are
included here in this three-disc set, one can literally see the series evolving
into what I think most people will remember as the definitive “Sanford And
Son” episodes particularly with LaWanda Page as Fred Sanford’s Sister-In-law
and arch nemesis “Aunt Esther.” Unfortunately her character does not appear
until nearly the very end of the second season, but there are still enough
additional characters and amusing storylines to make anyone laugh out loud.
I
think that the secret to the success of “Sanford And Son” was truly in the
talent of the entire cast of regulars and not in any one particular person.
While there was no show without Red Foxx, the show with Foxx and Demond Wilson
plus the additional regular characters was definitely the show’s strength
because it gave the character of Fred Sanford more opportunities to get
involved in the various predicaments and comedic situations that the show would
become known for and because there is only so much that can be done with a
comedy series centered around cantankerous old widower and his only son. So
season two expands the world of “Sanford And Son” to include recurring
characters such as Fred’s friend Bubba, Lamont’s friend Rollo, and their new
Puerto Rican neighbor Julio. However the standout scene-stealer that made the
series memorable was truly LaWanda Page as Aunt Esther. I expect the eventual
third season set of “Sanford And Son” to be better than the first two
seasons combined, but watching season two is watching a series climbing up
toward it’s prime though not quite reaching it yet.
Richard
Pryor co-wrote two hilarious episodes of the series entitled “The Dowry” and
“Sanford & Son & Sister Makes Three” and other notable and must-see
episodes included within the second season set are entitled “Card Sharps”,
“Have Gun, Will Sell”, “A Visit From Lena Horne”, “Lamont Goes
African”, “Watts Side Story”, and “Rated X.”
Time
has not been kind to the video masters used for the transfer though I am
absolutely sure that this is the best available source materials used to make
what is likely to be as good as anyone is ever likely to see them on home video
let alone television broadcast. Actually it really is not that bad, but there
are a few anomalies and scratches that are no doubt inherent from the
degradation of the source tapes, which occurs generally in time with all
analogue video. All 24 episodes are presented in their (1.33:1) broadcast aspect
ratio with English Two-Channel Monaural Sound and optional English Captions and
Closed Captions for the hearing impaired as well as Spanish Language Subtitles.
Aside
from the standard TV on DVD spot from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, there
are no extra features included within this set. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Sanford And Son: The
Second Season” is available on DVD-Video now from Columbia TriStar Home
Entertainment.
