David Zucker and Jim Abrams have effortlessly made the Scary Movie franchise their own without losing some of the offbeat style and humor the Wayans Brothers brought to the film series they created. The first two films are distinctly different in many ways from the third and fourth. While Zucker tends to layer his comedy with site gags that demand repeat viewing to get all the jokes and he also puts the jokes out in such a way as to hit a broad spectrum of viewers, the Wayans films tend to be more overt with more blatant sexual jokes mixed in for good measure. The Zucker sexual jokes tend to be more like their previous franchises, which have included Airplane and The Naked Gun. I suppose it is good that David Zucker doesn’t try to duplicate the same style of humor as the Wayans brothers in part because David Zucker’s name is in itself a brand with expectations attached from fans, but I do miss the perspective the Wayans brought to the films. Like the previous entry, there are some laugh out loud moments and some inner chuckles, but the film slows down a lot when they start trying to spoof The Village.

Scary Movie 4: Unrated is presented in a 16 by 9 widescreen aspect ratio with up to 1080p video resolution available and a choice of English or French Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Plus Surround Sound available and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options. Using MPEG 4 AVC video encoding, the picture quality is good, but as one of three HD DVDs to be released by The Weinstein Company through Genius Products, I am guessing it is sort of like the early DVDs. Distributors are just trying to get the hang of mastering these discs and I believe they will get better the same way DVD titles in general got better as time went by. There was a glitch I encountered where for a few seconds the sound and picture froze and then went out of synch. The problem fixed itself without having to stop the playback or anything, but this has never happened with any other HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc titles that I have screened and or reviewed so it might be an isolated incident, but I do not think it was my player.

David Zucker, Jeff Abrams, and Craig Mazin provide a feature length screen specific audio commentary track for the film as well as optional commentary for 15 alternate and extended scenes that can be viewed individually or through a “Play All” feature and like the feature film itself, which was shot using HD cameras, the bonus features are presented in 16 by 9 widescreen using MPEG 4 AVC encoding. A series of featurettes to support the film are included like The Scary Truth: A Conversation With The Filmmakers (35:00), The Man Behind The Laugh (Director – David Zucker) (3:42), Zany Spoof Humor – Zucker Style (2:15), cast interviews (4:43), The Visual Effects Of Scary Movie 4 (8:38), The Youngbloodz and Rappers & Actors (2:34), The Cast (16:01), Improvisation Of Craig Bierko (7:09), who truly makes the film hilarious in most of the scenes he appears in and deserves to come back for Scary Movie 5. A reel of bloopers (6:38) and the theatrical trailer (2:10) wrap up the bonus materials on this disc. The seamless menus worked well. Scary Movie 4: Unrated is available on HD DVD now at retailers on and offline courtesy of The Weinstein Company and Genius Products.
