I
remember seeing this musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas
Carol” on TV a lot around Thanksgiving as part of an afternoon of holiday
programming. There are so many filmed versions that I do not know what is truly
the definitive filmed adaptation, but I do think this is one of the better ones
with Albert Finney as “Scrooge” himself and a memorable turn by the late Sir
Alec Guinness as the ghost of Scrooge’s dead partner “Jacob Marley.” The
film actually features a grim reaper like figure as the Ghost of Christmas
Future and even sees Scrooge in hell of all places.
Presented
in an anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) aspect ratio, “Scrooge” looks nicely
detailed and though somewhat dated in the effects department, it certainly has
never looked better than on DVD. The new English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Soundtrack serves the film on DVD well with the music creating a nice ambient
feel. An English Dolby Surround Soundtrack and English Captions and Closed
Captions for the hearing impaired are encoded onto the DVD as options.
Sadly
there are no extra value features included on this disc at all. The menus are
all standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Scrooge”
will debut on DVD-Video from Paramount home Entertainment on Tuesday, September
23, 2003.
