Warner Brothers acquired the rights to “The Sea Hawk” after buying First National Pictures, who had produced a successful silent version of the film years earlier. With the success of “The Private Lives Of Elizabeth And Essex” as well as the economic break the studio would receive by recycling some of the sets and costumes from that feature, “The Sea Hawk” was put into production. The film takes place during the reign of Queen Elizabeth just as “The Private Lives Of Elizabeth And Essex” had, but it also carried with it some similarities to Flynn’s “Captain Blood” and was marketed as “Robin Hood at sea.” In fact only the name “The Sea Hawk” was used from the original literary property. Great indoor sets containing life size portions of giant English and Spanish ships were constructed in tanks that could be flooded and even by modern standards, the engineering behind these sets is quite impressive. Michael Curtiz stepped in as Director once more and the film is photographed beautifully. In fact the black and white cinematography can truly be appreciated as never before with this wonderful (1.33:1) DVD aspect ratio presentation, which is accompanied, by a clear English Monaural Soundtrack and English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired as English, French, and Spanish Language Subtitles as options. Errol Flynn is at the top of his game when it comes to his fencing skills and the film itself served as a metaphor for Hitler’s attempts to break the will of the British through air raids during World War II.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold arguably supplied one of his best motion picture scores for this Errol Flynn picture. Like the other feature film releases within Warner Home Video’s “Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection,” this DVD edition of “The Sea Hawk” features another “Warner Night At The Movies 1939” featurette hosted by Leonard Maltin (4:02) with a newsreel containing actual footage from The Battle of Britain (1:50), a fluffy short entitled “Alice In Movieland” (21:39), which stars Joan Leslie and was written by none other than Ed Sullivan. A black and white cartoon featuring Porky Pig (6:48) as well as trailers for Errol Flynn’s “Virginia City” (1:59) and “The Sea Hawks” (2:22) are included along with the new featurette “The Sea Hawk: Flynn In Action” (17:31). The interactive menus are well rendered and easy to navigate.

“The Sea Hawk” is available as a part of the “Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection” DVD box set or separately now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Warner Home Video.
