“Seed
Of Chucky” is arguably one of the most absurd films released last year and as
a result one of the most entertaining mixes of horror and comedy to be released
in years with the notable exception of “Shaun Of The Dead,” which in my
opinion is still the best mix of comedy and horror to be released theatrically
since John Landis’ “An American Werewolf In London” in 1981. Interestingly
all three films are now available on DVD-Video courtesy of Universal Studios
Home Entertainment. Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (voiced by
Jennifer Tilly) are back along with their offspring Glen or Glenda (voiced by
Billy Boyd) to wreck havoc on Hollywood with Jennifer Tilly proving she is a
good sport by playing a parody of herself as well as Redman playing himself and
many behind-the-scenes actors and crewmembers serving the film within the film
too. Cult film Auteur John Waters plays a somewhat nefarious paparazzi in the
film and is not only a huge fan of the series, but according to the optional
feature length popup text trivia option included on the DVD, Waters imagines
that not only will there be a sixth and seventh entry in the series, but someday
there will even be a musical.
As
funny as “Seed Of Chucky” is, I was surprised by the amount of gore in the
film, which includes buckets of spurting blood, human and puppet decapitations,
and steaming entrails among other gruesome imagery. It is a miracle that the
film’s humor is never diluted and it does not fall into the trap of being
overly self referential or too clever for it’s own good. Of all the
“Chucky” films I think this is my favorite though on the feature length
audio commentary with Writer and Director Don Mancini and Actress Jennifer Tilly
it is stated that not only should one watch “Bride Of Chucky” and “Seed Of
Chucky” back to back, but listen to their audio commentaries too since
“Bride Of Chucky” is frequently referenced. Mancini also shares another more
technical feature length audio commentary track with Puppet Master Tony Gardner
and even provides optional audio commentary with Actress Debbie Carrington on a
slashed scene (3:19) that can be found among the extra value materials. What is
great too is that all of the commentary tracks on DVD are worth listening to
because they are very interesting and informative. Mancini is a very articulate
speaker and he keeps that pace of the conversations from ever sagging. So if you
include the text trivia comments, that means consumers get a total of three
feature length commentary tracks plus an optional commentary track for a deleted
scene and that just scratches the surface of what this DVD has to offer.
The
English DTS Digital 5.1 Theatrical Surround Soundtrack is excellent and for
those who do not have a DTS decoder within their home theater receivers, there
is also a full English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and none of these
features ever cause a sacrifice in the clear and colorful anamorphic widescreen
picture quality found on the disc, which presents “Seed Of Chucky” in a
(1.85:1) aspect ratio that preserves the manner in which the film was exhibited
theatrically as close as possible for home video users.
The
film actually only covers 20 chapter stops, but in addition to a cute opening
introduction by Chucky and family (1:23) there are two additional gags after the
film credits entitled “Emotional Parents” (: 26) and “Sound Booth” (:
55), where we see Chucky record his own comments for the DVD. These disc
companions carry over to a “Larry King Show” like interview with Chucky
(2:20), featuring clips of Chucky auditioning for roles in “Scarface” and
“American Pie” and a sit-down with the family as they share some of their
slides from a recent vacation, where Chucky got mischievous (3:32). There is
also a behind-the-scenes featurette (18:45) as well as “Seed Of Chucky”
related clips from “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (1:31) featuring
Jennifer Tilly as well the puppet stars themselves on MUN2 Fusion (4:27).
Tilly also provides onscreen text diary notes that can be read
individually as if one were going through a picture gallery and there is a reel
of four-finished scene to storyboard comparisons too (13:56). The theatrical
trailer (2:11) and teaser trailer (1:01) wrap up the extra value features
related to the film on the DVD.
Before
the opening of the main menu there is a reel of previews for “Unleashed”,
“Assault On Precinct 13”, and “White Noise” (3:31). The menus feature
animated transitions with scenes from the film to standard interactive still
frames and all are easy to navigate. I am very impressed by the value of the
content as well as the amount that could be encoded onto the DVD without
sacrificing picture and sound quality. “Seed Of Chucky:
Unrated And Fully Extended Version: Widescreen” is a riot and definitely worth
checking out now that it is available on DVD-Video at retailers on and offline
courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
