Andy and Arlene Sidaris are quite literally a Mom and Pop filmmaking team that have produced a series of action films that basically emphasize “Bullets, Bombs, and Babes,” which I think sums up their genre pretty well. They are not exploitation films and they are not soft-core porn though I think the films are geared toward providing entertainment that couples can watch together since the guys and the girls who star in this series are all hard-bodied people. So the women can pant at the cast of men, some of whom have less than five percent body fat, while the men can wag their tongues at the women, who are all former Playboy or Penthouse Centerfolds. Granted these are not movies that are going to earn Oscar nominations, but you know not every Oscar winning film is entertaining to watch over and over again. So there’s room for all sorts of films.

I watched the films out of order so the following films listed here correspond the individual length as noted above. The films included in “The Andy Sidaris Collection: Volume One” DVD box set as I screened them are “Enemy Gold,” “Savage Beach,” “Picasso Trigger,” “Hard Ticket To Hawaii,” “Malibu Express,” and “Guns.” Each of the films is presented in full-framed (1.33:1) aspect ratios with clear English Stereo Sound. The picture quality is quite good with “”Enemy Gold,” Savage Beach,” and “Picasso Trigger” looking better than the others, but perhaps the only one that showed any grain that appears to be from the print used and not the mastering process was “Malibu Express.” Otherwise for six low budget action films, the picture quality on DVD is impressive, which is a plus since as important as the action is, these films are also a bit of an erotic tease and believe me from one guy to another, you will appreciate the clarity of the DVD on your TV screens with such stunning babes as Devin Devasquez (My personal favorite), Shae Marks, Suzi Simpson, Dona Speir, and the legendary Julie Strain, who actively participates in all six films with short videotaped introductions with Mr. Sidaris himself.

Mr. Sidaris and his Wife Arlene Sidaris provide informative screen specific feature length audio commentaries that are straightforward and completely down to Earth. They also participate in an excellent featurette series entitled “Andy Sidaris’ Film School,” which uses most of it’s examples from “Return To Savage Beach” (Not included in this set) with Andy giving detailed instructions on the essentials of coverage on location action scenes while his Wife Arlene discusses the sexy scenes, including alternate takes for TV and so on.

“Enemy Gold” was directed by Andy Sidaris’ son Drew Sidaris and extra features, which though different for each film, do tend to be the expected star interviews and comments include a number of interesting shorts like interviews with the always entertaining Joe Bob Briggs as well as even an MTV interview as well a look at photo shoots with Julie Strain, and more. The interviews can be quite intimate in nature and are definitely not the run of the mill promotional materials. Inside each keep case is an insert with production notes and chapter stop information that delineates whether the scenes features bullets, bombs, babes or combinations of all three. There is also a sample limited edition preview comic insert entitled “Andy Sidaris’ Spy Chicks.” Mr. Sidaris has a distinguished career as a Director for “ABC Sports,” garnering 7 Emmy® Awards while his Wife Arlene Sidaris produced 45 episodes of the popular 1970s TV series “Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” for ABC. Look for WCW Wrestling Star Marcus “Buff” Bagwell, Actor Danny Trejo, who has appeared in such films as “Desperado” and the “From Dusk Till Dawn” trilogy among many others as well as former Adult Film Star Terri Weigel in this series too.

A book published by Heavy Metal entitled “Bullets, Bombs and Babes: The Films Of Andy Sidaris” (ISBN# 1-932413-00-6) is an excellent companion to this series that can be purchased at stores on and offline along with the films on DVD and the book and films can also be purchased directly from www.andysidaris.com or by clicking on the book cover photo icon below.

Each DVD features trailers for all twelve films in the series that include “Hard Ticket To Hawaii” (1:39), “Picasso Trigger” (1:39), “Savage Beach” (1:39), “Malibu Express” (2:20), “Guns” (1:28), “Do Or Die” (1:19), “Hard Hunted” (1:06), “Fit To Kill” (1:44), “Enemy Gold” (2:27), “The Dallas Connection” (1:27), “Day Of The Warrior” (2:04), and “Return To Savage Beach” (2:23).  All of the extra features can be watched individually or as one reel between 30 and 60 or so minutes each. The interactive menus on all six discs are standard still frames that are easy to navigate.

Overall this is a very nice set that offers something for nearly everyone and a great bargain too. “The Andy Sidaris Collection: Volume One” DVD box set will debut on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at retailers on and offline from Malibu Bay Films and Ventura Distribution Incorporated.
