I used to love
tuning in or taping “Sightings” when it aired in syndication. It was a great
source for story ideas a research leads. This film inspired in part by a “true
story” has a “Sightings” crew investigate a house infested with entities
terrorizing a small family in a heartland town. It might be unfair of me to
compare this film to the TV series, but there was not one instance in the
dramatization that was nearly as interesting as many of the stories investigated
on the magazine program, which now airs in reruns on the Sci-Fi Channel. That is
not to say that it is not entertaining. “Sightings: Heartland Ghost” is
engaging, but not quite as spellbinding as some of the stories covered in the
mid 1990s by the real series. Even the cast can’t seem to match the
characterizations some of the paranormal crew investigators the series would
employ for various news bits.
Presented in a
(1.33:1) aspect ratio, “Sightings: Heartland Ghost” is presented mostly in
filmed scenes with various video segments to add an element of realism to the
film. The picture quality throughout is very clear, but what made
“Sightings” the series more spooky was the fact at times the video was not
at all crystal clear because much was caught on the fly so to speak. The English
Stereo Soundtrack is free of any analogue background noise, which hurts in some
ways the documentary style effect the film should have had to draw the viewer in
more. English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired are encoded as an option
too. The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
Unfortunately
there are no extra value features included on the DVD. “Sightings: Heartland
Ghost” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and offline from
Paramount Home Entertainment.
