Even
with special effects by three time Oscar® winner Carlo Rambaldi and Stephen
King penning the screenplay for “Silver Bullet” himself based on his
novelette “Cycle Of The Werewolf,” this Dino De Laurentis production is
among the weakest Stephen King adaptations ever produced. The film is
unintentionally funny to a point that when I saw the film in a high school
gothic literature class 16 or 17 years ago, the entire class would cheer and
laugh at the victims. The werewolf effects are terrible, especially when
compared to the bladder makeup effects used to create the transformation from
human to werewolf in such earlier horror films as “An American Werewolf In
London” and “The Howling.” For a few goofs and cheap thrills, “Stephen
King’s Silver Bullet” is worth a look, but don’t expect a masterpiece of
horror and suspense.
I
think this is the first time “Stephen King’s Silver Bullet” has ever been
made available on home video in the original (2.35:1) aspect ratio enhanced for
16 by 9 TVs. The picture quality is somewhat disappointing, but still better
than any other home video release I have ever seen. Clear Two-Channel English
and French Language Monaural Soundtracks are included as listening options along
with English Captions and Closed Captions encoded on to the DVD.
There
are no extra feature materials included on this DVD. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Stephen King’s Silver
Bullet” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 from Paramount Home
Entertainment.
