With
films such as Disney and Pixar’s “The Incredibles” as well as the “Harry
Potter” series and even the “X-Men” feature film series already released
both theatrically and on home video, “Sky High” falls short in nearly every
fantastic imagination grabbing category because quite simply it is neither
creative enough or funny enough to stand along side the franchises that may have
inspired it. The effects in some cases look so bad that one has to believe that
it must have been an artistic choice. It is sad too because the film begins with
some promise and has a nice set of supporting star turns that include Kelly
Preston, Kurt Russell, the still wonderful Lynda Carter, Bruce “Don’t Call
Me Ash” Campbell, “Kids In The Hall” alumni Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley
as well as Cloris Leachman. Somehow the film feels like a it could have been
produced by the same people who created the “Power Rangers” and much of the
humor and action is so aimed at kids that adults are likely to find themselves
yawning if they can even sit through the whole thing.
“Sky
High” has been released on DVD in both widescreen and full screen editions and
letterbox on UMD for PSP. The picture and sound quality for the widescreen
version are up to par with other Disney DVD releases with an anamorphic
widescreen (2.35:1) aspect ratio presentation coupled with English, French and
Spanish Language Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks and English Subtitles
For The Deaf And Hearing Impaired as well as French Language Subtitles encoded
onto the dual layered DVD as options. Bonus materials include an alternate
opening (3:20), a “super” bloopers reel (4:19), a behind-the-scenes
featurette (15:19) as well as stunts featurette (7:00) and a music video for
Bowling For Soup’s “I Melt With You” (4:00). Previews for “Lady And The
Tramp”, “Glory Road”, “Once Upon A Mattress”, “Kim Possible”,
“Toy Story 2”, and “That’s So Raven” wrap up the extra value materials
on this DVD.
The
interactive menus feature the flying school bus is both children friendly and
easy to navigate. “Sky High:
Widescreen” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and offline courtesy
