Robert
was born a female. Lola was born a male. They’re together and falling in love
in what has to be one of strangest documentaries I have ever seen. To be honest
I found myself feeling squeamish at times from watching this unlikely story that
proves more than ever that love is blind. I do not think I could ever imagine
Robert as a woman and I certainly would never know upon first glance. He made
the transition after having two sons, but there is no way I could buy Lola as
being a woman. The voice just gives it away. In the last year of Robert’s
life, he meets Lola and the two fall in love.
The
film is poignant and thought provoking though I must admit it bit hard to take.
The picture and sound quality are quite good and there are three deleted scenes
that add more than 30 additional minutes of interviews and insight into this
couple’s background. There are other side interviews that run about 13 minutes
and 9 ½ minutes each respectively. Bonus trailers for other titles available on
DVD from Docurama and a filmmaker’s text statement along with filmmaker and
crew biographies wrap up the extra features. The menus are standard interactive
still frames that are easy to navigate. “Southern Comfort” is available on
DVD now from Docurama and New Video.
