One
of the earliest anime imports to capture the imagination of a generation of
children who saw it was Tatsumoko Productions’ “Speed Racer.” Is it me or
does every little boy go through a fixation with cars when they are four or five
year’s old. I used to love to just watch the cars drive by when I was four and
was a huge collector of matchbox cars so it is no surprise that I liked and
still like the original “Speed Racer.” I mean what kid wouldn’t dream of
driving the “Mach-5” with all of the gizmos and gadgets that it has while
engaging in various race side adventures with Speed Racer himself? I mean the
car was and still is pretty darn cool in my opinion.
Now
courtesy of Artisan Family Home Entertainment, DVD-Video buyers of all ages can
see for the first time and or relive 11 fabulous adventures with Speed Racer’s
Mach-5 and the cast of characters that include the mysterious Racer X, Pops
Racer, Mom Racer, Trixie, Sparky, Inspector Detector, and the incredibly
annoying Sprittle and his pet monkey Chim Chim. Then there are the villains out
to sabotage and steal the secrets of the Mach-5 for themselves like Mr. Wiley,
Tongue Blaggard, Crucher Block, Captain Terror, Mr. Van Ruffle, Mr. Fixer, Snake
Oiler, and Ace Ducey. Like other anime imports of the time such as “Gigantor,”
the writers often changed the names into simple if not silly names to reach a
younger audience. Included within the keep case is an insert with the original
lyrics translated to English from the Japanese opening and closing theme songs
where the series was known as “Mach Go Go.”
Artisan
Family Home Entertainment has done an impressive job with bringing the first 11
animated episodes with newly restored and colorful transfers presented in their
original (1.33:1) television broadcast aspect ratio with English Two-Channel
Monaural Sound and optional English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired.
The episodes can be watched individually or as one long reel.
The
extra features include onscreen production notes covering the genesis of the
series, it’s US translation, and bios on the original American version voice
cast. There is also a narrated tour of the Mach-5 control panel, with
demonstrations of the various features of the car, including short clips of the
features in action from the series. There is a “Speed Racer” sing-along, a
villain’s gallery complete with 30-second clips for each from the series, and
a clip from the 1993 “Speed Racer” series as well as notes on the 1996 Speed
Racer Commercial for the Volkswagen GTL.
The
keep case comes house in a sleeve with real rubber tire face packaging. For
nostalgia and for anime historians and collector’s alike, “Speed Racer:
Limited Collector’s Edition” is must buy DVD available now from Artisan
Family Home Entertainment.
