In
2003 MTV aired a new animated series based on Marvel Comics’ “Spider-Man”
with Neil Patrick Harris providing the voice of Peter Parker, Ian Ziering as
Harry Oswald, and Lisa Loeb as the object of Parker’s silent affection, MJ.
The series bought together talents from Marvel Comics as well as artists that
helped make the CGI animated series “Roughnecks: Starship Troopers
Chronicles” a hit on both the SCI FI Channel and DVD. Sony Pictures Home
Entertainment is releasing the series to UMD for PSP in three volumes just as it
had on DVD.
The
first of these UMD volumes features Spider-Man encountering super villains like
a scientist whose experiments with reptilian DNA turns him into a deadly man
sized Lizard in the episode “Law Of The Jungle,” ex-KGB agents that take a
group of people hostage, including Peter Parker in “Tight Squeeze,” and a
dealy martial arts swordswoman bent on taking Spider-Man’s life in “Sword
Of Shikata.” These three episodes are
presented in a crisp letterboxed (1:78:1) aspect ratio with a well-rounded
English Stereo Soundtrack as well as optional English Subtitles. Since the PSP
screen is a (1.78:1) aspect ratio, the letterboxed image fits perfectly. Like
the DVD counterpart, “Spider-Man: The New Animated Series: The Mutant
Menace” has no extra value features related directly to the episodes included
on the UMD. Previews for “Charlie’s Angels”, “Spider-Man 2”, and
“You Got Served” are featured on the disc though. The interactive menus are
well rendered and easy to navigate.
