Here
is a film that tries to combine the horror of “Alien” with the wonder of “E.T.”
and fails miserably at both. “Star Crystal” begins with the discovery of
some mineral like rock on Mars. The short-range ship barely makes it to a
galactic halfway station with all hands aboard missing except for a strange
slimy being. Shortly after boarding, a catastrophe aboard the station causes it
to explode with the only survivors aboard the derelict ship with their hungry
passenger. Soon personnel are being dehydrated one by one until the last two
survivors discover there’s nothing to be afraid of at all. The creature, which
looks like “E.T.” covered in snot communicates its benevolent intentions and
explains it had to kill the others out of self-preservation. The survivors and
the creature then combine their resources so they can each get home.
I
have to admit there are more than a few New World Pictures releases that I
actually liked. “Battle Beyond The Stars,” “Galaxy Of Terror,” and
“DEFCON 4” were all low budget cheapies, but at least they had some kind of
charm to them that made them enjoyable. Unfortunately “Star Crystal” has no
charm. It is neither scary nor heartwarming. It is just dull.
A
bare bones (no pun intended) Anchor Bay Entertainment DVD release, “Star
Crystal” could be accused of looking better than it should. The transfer looks
pretty good for a z-movie from 18 years ago. A clear two-channel English
Monaural Soundtrack is provided, but there are no extra features to speak of
whatsoever. The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to
navigate.
“Star
Crystal” is available on DVD now from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
