Having had the benefit of getting a
look at what viewers can expect to see in the first portion of both season
premieres of the two Stargate TV series, I am happy to say that the
series writers and producers are finally making better use of the expanded
universe they have developed over the last ten years to include more interesting
crossovers though how these will carry out on the small screen remains to be
seen. Hopefully the storylines merging elements from both series will continue
to breathe new life into the shows and not retread areas of adventure that we
have already seen in previous seasons. The chickens are still roosting as the
consequences of trying to find a Wraith cure put the human population of both
galaxies at risk with Doctor Weir (Torri Higginson) facing both an inquiry on
Earth that she is forced to step through the gate in order to attend while
desperate efforts are made to prevent the Wraith hive ships from reaching Earth
as well as deal with the spiraling consequences of the actions taken. To go into
anything in further detail would mean to risk revealing spoilers, which I
won’t do.
Overall, I found the writing for
these two episodes in some ways to be better than the writing on SG-1 and
thus I have to admit that in some ways I think I enjoy Atlantis more
though I still feel both shows have a lot more to offer together and hope to
continue covering them for many seasons to come. I really like what they are
doing with both shows now and I honestly can’t state anything that I have not
already said in my review of the tenth season premiere of SG-1, except to
say that while both shows have an identity of their own, they also are very much
an integrated tapestry that I feel in order to get the full Stargate experience,
viewers must tune in to both religiously. One thing is for certain; we sure have
come a long way from the original feature film that inspired this franchise.
The third season premiere of
“Stargate: Atlantis” will follow “Stargate: SG-1” in the new timeslot of
10pm (ET/PT)/9pm (CT) beginning Friday, July 14, 2006 only on SCI FI. Don’t
miss them!
