When I was a
teenager, my friends and I would do stupid and destructive stunts that at the
time seemed like a big deal, but now seem less than quaint when compared to the
stuff Steve-O and his crew of stunt players and groupies do on camera. Funny
thing if my friends from high school and I were teenagers again today and we
tried to pull the same silly pranks we got away with in the mid 1980s, we would
probably not get away with it because of all the cameras hidden everywhere these
days alone. Yet it is precisely the fact that there are video cameras around
Steve-O and his pals that they are able to get away with a large amount of what
they do though as the title suggests, not everything.
If you are
familiar with the popular MTV series “Jackass” then you pretty much know
what to expect here. However the material is less polished, which is a good
thing when you see people doing some of the stuff they do in this video. Quite
honestly sometimes I am glad for the somewhat poor video quality because if it
were state-of-the art high definition video, I don’t think I could keep my
lunch down. Perhaps it is not fair to compare this third volume in Steve-O’s
ongoing DVD adventures to a network show, but it is hard not to think about the
roots that brought these characters into mainstream attention. Say what you want
about the reckless actions these guys take, but personally I got to hand it to
them, they got balls. Though the sight of Steve-O piercing his scrotum his
something that kind of goes above and beyond the call of duty to say the least.
The program’s
chapter stops are detailed according to the places Steve-O and his crew visited
while touring their live show and recording this DVD. These include scenes from
the USA, UK, Spring Break in Mexico, Norway, Amsterdam, Switzerland, Iceland,
Sweden, Copenhagen, and Finland. There are more than a few recognizable faces
that make an appearance in the video, including Giselle of “MTV’s The Real
World: Las Vegas” fame – “‘nuff said.” The picture quality is about
what one would expect from something like this with a full screen (1.33:1)
aspect ratio presentation. The soundtrack is English Stereo, but the audio level
is loud. I thought it was an uncompressed PCM track at first, but it is a Dolby
Digital Stereo Soundtrack about ten decibels higher than normal Stereo
Soundtracks on DVD so you may want to lower the volume on your receiver before
you play this disc.
There are a lot of
extra features that include a reel of deleted scenes (20:08) that can be viewed
individually or as a whole with the guys trashing hotels, beating each other,
Steve-O getting a wedgie from some beautiful topless UK gals and more. Also
included is a bonus DVD containing “Steve-O’s PCP Saved My Life” (33:08)
that was shot in early December of 2002 and depicts Steve-O and his crew’s
misadventures trying to reach a show where they are due to perform only to have
nature strand them in the Bronx and that’s just the beginning.
Overall this is a
pretty funny DVD set, but it lacks something that I think the “Jackass”
series and feature film had. Maybe it was just because it was the first to reach
such a wide audience or maybe it is something else. I honestly can articulate it
in words that would do it justice so I’m just following my gut on this one. If
you are a “Steve-O” fan then you will probably want to check this DVD out
pronto if you haven’t already. Say whatever you want but these jackasses are
laughing all the way to the bank while I’m reviewing this DVD set for free and
some of you are buying it now. So who are the real schmucks?

III: Out On Bail” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and offline
