Jim
Henson grew up listening to stories with his family and as he grew older his
affection for storytelling and fantasy would inspire his life toward a career
devoted to entertaining others with miraculous and imaginative creations. The
short lived TV series “The Storyteller” was inspired by Henson’s daughter
Lisa, who had returned from Harvard after taking a class in folklore. Eventually
the series aired in the United States on NBC where it is was well received by
critics and developed a loyal fan base. Unfortunately as is the case for things
that come before their time, despite the high quality of the series and the
various awards the series garnered, “The Storyteller” aired for only a few
short weeks with the remaining five episodes airing as a part of NBC’s “The
Jim Henson Hour” in 1989. Abroad the series had already aired in its entirety
in England and Japan. All nine episodes finally aired in America collectively on
HBO during the 19997-1998 TV season they way it should have been ten years
earlier.
Now
available on DVD-Video, viewers of all ages can enjoy all nine episodes
presented in a soft (1.33:1) aspect ratio with a clear English Stereo Soundtrack
and optional English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired encoded onto the
dual layered DVD. All of the episodes can be viewed continuously or individually
and tend to run between 24 and 25 minutes each. Within the keep case is an
insert containing information on each episode and another insert with liner
notes that include a note penned by the late Mr. Henson himself and behind the
scenes photos.
Bonus
DVD trailers for “The Dark Crystal” (: 50) and “Labyrinth” (: 32) are
included on the DVD, but there are no extra value features that are directly
related to the series on the disc unfortunately. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“Jim
Henson’s The Storyteller: The Complete Collection” is available on DVD-Video
now at retailers on and offline from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.
