This Menahem Golan and Yoram
Globus production looks like something one would find the crew of the Satellite
Of Love roasting on “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and I would not be
surprised if they did tear it apart. Sean Connery looks ridiculous as the Green
Knight though his presence on screen is still the best part of this
disappointing adaptation of the classic myth. Squire Gawain is made into a
Knight when he alone accepts the Green Knight’s challenge of cut for a cut.
The Green Knight’s head is severed, but he quickly reattaches his head to his
body and gives Gawain one year to get his affairs in order before he collects
his cut. However there is a riddle to all of this that could save Gawain’s
neck should he discover the answer in time. Despite having some extra guest
appearances by Trevor Howard, Peter Cushing, and John Rhys-Davies, “Sword Of
The Valiant: The Legend Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight” collapses in on
itself with some terrible music, a few unintentionally funny scenes, and a flat
ending that does no justice whatsoever to the source material that inspired it.
Some good production value is obtained through the locations and some of the
costuming, in particular the suits of armor, but some of the outfits look like
leftovers from a renaissance fair or something.
This budget MGM DVD release
presents “Sword Of The Valiant: The Legend Of Sir Gawain And The Green
Knight” in a pan and scan (1.33:1) aspect ratio. The picture quality is about
average with some debris and scratches still present on the source print used
for the DVD mastering. The English Dolby Surround Soundtrack is rather low and
unremarkable. English Captions and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired and
French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded as options. The theatrical
trailer (2:49) is presented in a letterboxed (2.35:1) aspect ratio while the
menus on this DVD are all standard interactive still frames that are easy to
navigate.
“Sword Of The Valiant: The
Legend Of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday,
April 6, 2004 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Home Entertainment.
