With the theatrical release of Terminator Salvation upon us at the time of this writing, Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Skynet Edition to Blu-ray Disc.  This is the second time the film has been released on Blu-ray Disc, but the first time all three versions have been made available via seamless branching in THX Certified 1080p high definition resolution (where available) at an aspect ratio of (2.35:1) widescreen. For a film that is now twenty years old, Terminator 2: Judgment Day looks pretty good and it is perhaps the only non Lucasfilm production Blu-ray Disc that is THX Certified complete with the classic T2 THX certified trailer. The film quality is better than The Terminator on Blu-ray Disc, but not as sharp as Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines on Blu-ray Disc. This is in part because of the manner in which each film was shot as well as artistic preferences between James Cameron and Jonathan Mostow.

The Blu-ray Disc was produced by Van Ling, who produced the previous Laserdisc and DVD editions and in addition to this Blu-ray Disc release, Lionsgate Home Entertainment has also released the limited edition T2 Complete Collector’s Set, which contains both the Ultimate and Extreme Edition DVDs, an exclusive disc containing a digital copy of the theatrical cut of T2 and the Skynet Edition Blu-ray Disc packaged with a 14” T-800 Endoskull bust that plays sound effects from the film while the eyes light up.

The THX Optimizer® program is included for picture and sound calibration and all three versions feature a discrete English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Surround Soundtrack, a Lossless English DTS-HD MA 6.1 Surround Soundtrack as well as a Dolby Headphone Soundtrack option. A French Language Dolby Surround Soundtrack and English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well as English French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded onto the Blu-ray Disc as options. There is also an English TheatreVision™ Descriptive Narrative Audio Track for the Visually Impaired and the disc has a D-Box Metadata Track for D-Box Motion Based Systems. The feature length audio commentary with 26 members from the cast and crew giving comments edited together as well as the audio commentary with Writer/Director James Cameron and Co-Writer William Wisher have been carried over from previous home video releases for this Blu-ray Disc release.

The screen specific feature length audio commentary with Writer and Director James Cameron and Writer William Wisher is excellent. The commentary is very interesting and is the first time Cameron and Wisher have ever sat down for a feature length commentary in its entirety for a film like T2. Cameron makes a joke regarding the line “She’ll be back” spoken by Arnold in the T3 trailer and he definitely dominates the discussion when he has something to say, but he also appears to be very respectful of Wisher’s comments and never interrupts without recalling Wisher’s previously unfinished comment afterwards. Much of the archival material found on the previous DVD releases is now available as picture-in-picture vignettes that include behind-the-scenes video and multimedia featurettes as well as storyboard to script comparison. There are also quizzes and games and text comments too and the Blu-ray Disc is BD-Live enabled for access to bonus content not readily available on the disc.

High definition deleted scenes and the teaser and trailers in HD wrap up the extra value materials with the exception of accessing the third version of T2 with the alternate ending. To get Skynet access, type in 82997 in the blank box to view the film. Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skynet Edition is available on Blu-ray Disc now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
