I
feel as though “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” has to be among the record
holders for a film released on video in more formats and in more variations than
any other except for maybe “Army Of Darkness.” From VHS, laserdisc, VCD,
three incarnations on DVD, and now UMD-Video, there is only one reason why
“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is available on so many different formats and
that is because it is a damn good movie with sci-fi action, special effects that
were revolutionary for their time, an intriguing storyline, and perhaps the
memory of Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was at the top of his career as a big
screen action hero.
Like
many films, “T2” has changed hands from one home video distributor to the
next and with Lions Gate acquisition of Artisan Entertainment, “Terminator 2:
Judgment Day” is now a catalogue title in the Lions Gate Home Entertainment
library as well as a fitting showcase to demo films on Sony’s PSP. Not unlike
some high definition broadcasts where unfortunately, the films are framed to fit
the (1.78:1) aspect ratio of most high definition displays, “Terminator 2:
Judgment Day” has been altered so that after the future prologue and the
opening credits the letterboxed (2.35:1) aspect ratio changes so the entire 16
by 9 widescreen display on the PSP is used. The picture quality is terrific, but
what is more impressive is the English Dolby Headphone Track. If you switch
between the English Stereo Soundtrack and the Dolby Headphone Track you will
immediately notice the difference. The sound is so much fuller because it has
been especially mixed to take advantage of the ear buds the PSP comes with. In
comparison, the English Stereo Soundtrack sounds tin like and weak. All UMD
titles should sport the Dolby Headphone Track option as a standard the way most
DVDs offer Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound or better for the customer. If Dolby
Digital and DTS bring a home theater sound system to life than DHT is what
brings the mobile theater made possible through the PSP to life like nothing
else. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” along with “The Punisher” are the
only two UMD titles to sport this feature and both are distributed by Lions Gate
Home Entertainment. I hope all the studios and distributors take notice for
future releases.
English
and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded onto the UMD as options too. The
theatrical version of “T2” is what is presented on the UMD edition. There
are no extra value features at all except for a list of available and upcoming
UMD titles being distributed by Lions Gate that include the above mentioned
“The Punisher”, “Open Water”, “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder”,
“SAW”, “Total Recall”, “Cabin Fever”, “House Of The Dead”,
“Young Guns”, and “High Tension.” When I first saw the little title
boxes I thought they were links to trailers, but unless my disc was
malfunctioning, there was no trailer to view on any of these boxes I highlighted
at all. I also found it odd that there was no sound whatsoever in the animated
menus. This is the first UMD I’ve reviewed to ever appear that way. No other
disc I’ve reviewed so far was like this, but since the film’s picture and
sound presentation was so good on UMD for the PSP, I can only imagine that it
just is the way it is or supposed to be. If anyone has had a different
experience, please e-mail me.
“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” for picture and sound quality is well worth the investment for any PSP user and it is available on UMD now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Lions Gate Home Entertainment.
