Arguably the most poignant film within Warner Home Video’s “Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection” DVD box set is “They Died With Their Boots On.” Though not a strict historical account of the life of 7th Calvary Regiment General George Armstrong Custer, who is played brilliantly here by Errol Flynn, the film depicts Custer’s career colorfully with a somewhat humorous opening act that follows his days at West Point and then gradually grows darker in tone as he goes from Civil War hero to frontier legend in the Battle of Little Big Horn where Custer and his troops are outmaneuvered, outnumbered, and slaughtered. The image of glory coming from certain annihilation can be seen as an archetype from mythology reenacted throughout history from the phrase and meaning behind “Remember The Alamo” in American culture to the destruction of the British troops at the hands of the Zulu nation as depicted in “Zulu Dawn,” a prequel to the classic feature film “Zulu.”

The film was also the last time Errol Flynn would star opposite Olivia de Havilland. The final “Warner Night at The Movies 1942” segment hosted by Leonard Maltin (4:06) features another newsreel (5:06), the military short “Soldiers In White” (20:49), the animated Abbott & Costello inspired short “A Tale Of Two Kitties” (6:37), which introduces the animated character of Tweety Bird, trailers for “All Through The Night” (2:45) and “They Died With Their Boots On” (2:46) and a new featurette entitled “They Died With Their Boots On: To Hell Or Glory” (9:45) that concludes the extra value materials on the disc.

The interactive menus are well rendered and easy to navigate.  “They Died With Their Boots On” is available now on DVD-Video at retailers on and offline as either a part of Warner Home Video’s “Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection” box set or sold separately.
