American viewers, who were fans of both Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood, got a treat when BBC America began airing the second season with only a two-week lag behind the premieres of each episode in the U.K. Then SCI FI followed with a shorter lag time than had previously been seen in the States between the U.K. and U.S. premieres of the fourth series. The second season of Torchwood is more cohesive than the first, filling in the gap between series three and four of Doctor Who with a variety of storylines and noteworthy guest stars that include the beautiful Freema Agyeman reprising her role is Doctor Martha Jones from Doctor Who in a three episode story arc that has her sent from UNIT at the request requested of TORCHWOOD Team Leader Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) to assist in the investigation regarding mysterious deaths that may have extraterrestrial origins. Another noteworthy guest star was James Marsters, best known for his role as the vampire Spike on Buffy The Vampire Slayer as Captain John Hart, a rogue Time Agent with a past with Jack and his own agenda that will effect everyone before the season concludes. Other guest stars include Alan Dale (Ugly Betty) and Richard Briers (Much Ado About Nothing).

Torchwood is a darker and more adult oriented show than Doctor Who and the 13 episodes of the second season reflect the gambit of emotions from the heartbreaking in installments like Meat and Adrift to character oriented stories that provoke strong philosophical questions such as A Day In The Death and even glimpse into the back stories of all the team members in Fragments. Other noteworthy episodes include To The Last Man, Something Borrowed, From Out Of The Rain, and Exit Wounds. A short blurb on each episode in the five-disc set is on the inner flap of the book style digipack that comes housed in a handsome glossy cardboard slipcase. All 13 season 2 episodes are presented in their original 16 by 9 enhanced (1.78:1) aspect ratio and feature additional footage not seen in the original BBC America broadcasts because of advertisements. The picture quality is terrific and a full English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack is included for each episode along with optional English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired.

There are not quite as many extra value features in this five disc set as there were in the first season DVD set, but one does get all of the Torchwood Declassified behind-the-scenes episodes, which can be viewed individually or as one feature with a running length of approximately two hours and twenty four minutes on disc five. A companion featurette entitled The Life and Deaths of Captain Jack (22:04) is included on disc four along with a funny reel of outtakes (8:40) and deleted scenes (17:08). BBC Video trailers for the second season of Robin Hood, the first season of Primeval (1:19), and the fourth season of Doctor Who (2:24) wrap up the extra value features found in this DVD set.
