Ugly Betty exceeded my expectations when I screened the terrific six-disc box set recently released by Buena Vista Home Entertainment. What could have been a cliché filled primetime soap opera/comedy is actually quite heart warming and at the same time reveals a bit of the reality of working in high pressure environments, particularly when it comes to politics and alliances. The DVD set presents all 23 season one episodes in a (1.78:1) widescreen aspect ratio that is enhanced for 16 by 9 televisions. In addition the DVD set features English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and a Spanish Language Dolby Surround Soundtrack coupled with English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, which is available for audio commentaries on the select episodes as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded as options.
Audio commentaries are spread out across the set with Creator and Executive Producer Silvio Horta and Director Richard Shepard as well as Co-Executive Producer Teri Weinbus talking about the series pilot on disc one while disc two features a commentary for the episode “Fey’s Sleigh Ride” with Stars Becki Newton and Michael Urie. Disc three features a commentary with Actress and Executive Producer Salma Hayek and Actor Eric Mabius while disc five has an audio commentary by Stars Vanessa Williams and Michael Urie.
The remaining extra value features that focus on the makeup process to turn Actress America Ferrara into Betty as well as cast and crew comments on what it is to become “Bettyfied.” (12:14). A featurette about the production design (6:55) and green screen work (5:44) is also included along with twenty-seven deleted scenes (20:50) and a blooper reel (3:45). It is interesting to note that while the pilot was shot on location in Manhattan and Queens, the series is shot on the West Coast and the exteriors as well as some of the interiors caught by second unit green screened in later.
Previews for Brothers & Sisters, Meet The Robinsons, Grey’s Anatomy, Soap Net, Enchanted Tale, What About Brian, Lost, Desperate House Wives and an Ugly Betty TV Spot (10:54) wrap up the bonus features included in this six-disc set. Ugly Betty: The Complete First Season – The Bettyfied Edition is the best way to catch up with the series that returns to ABC for a second season this fall and is available now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
