Inspired
by Gilbert & Sullivan, the folks at “Big
Idea” took their CGI animated vegetable characters to create a new Christmas
special while producing an upcoming Easter special that will now serve as a
sequel to this special despite the fact that the as yet to be released Easter
special will be based on Dickens as said by the animators in the audio
commentary track featured on this DVD. “The Star Of Christmas” looks great
and appears to be a direct digital transfer with a full framed (1.33:1) aspect
ratio, but the animation is not nearly as polished as something produced for a
feature film and it is odd to see talking vegetable walking around, talking, and
even holding things despite the fact they have no legs or hands. An English
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and English Dolby Surround Soundtrack are
provided as listening options along with English Captions for the hearing
impaired.
Extra
features include a (8:17) behind-the-scenes featurettes, which supports the
audio commentary well. There is also a gallery of concept art, a progression
reel that compares a final animated character action scene to the storyboards
(2:40), and trailers for other Big Idea videos that include “Jonah”,
“Jonah Sing-Along Songs And More,” “The Toy That Saved Christmas,”
“Larryboy – Leggo My Ego,” “Larryboy And The Angry Eyebrows,” “3-2-1
Penguins,” and “3-2-1 Penguins! – Runaway Pride At The Lightstation
Kilowatt.”
There
are also a number of interactive family features for the kids as well as DVD-ROM
cards and web links and more. “Big Idea’s The Star Of Christmas” is
available on DVD-Video now.
