Inspired by a true story that
spawned a trilogy of feature films in the 1970s, this latest Hollywood remake
entitled “Walking Tall,” starring The Rock, is at best a disappointment and
perhaps the least entertaining of the four features he has appeared in so far.
The problem is not The Rock, who still possesses the same onscreen charisma that
made him the most electrifying figure in sports entertainment in the WWE. In
fact the film starts off well enough with The Rock’s character entering his
hometown to discover it is not exactly what he remembered it to be. What hurts
the film is that it is predictable with ridiculous action sequences that are not
all that exciting to watch either. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I
just found “Walking Tall” to be too formulaic and ultimately flat. MGM is
releasing this 2004 remake of “Walking Tall” with anamorphic widescreen
(2.35:1) aspect ratio presentation that preserves the manner in which the film
was exhibited theatrically as close as possible for DVD users. The transfer is
crisp and quite colorful with no deficiencies to note. The English Dolby Digital
5.1 Surround Soundtrack is not as dynamic as one might expect, but unlike the
movie, it is far from being flat. A French and a Spanish Language Dolby Surround
Soundtrack are included as options along with English Captions and Closed
Captions for the hearing impaired as well as French, Spanish, Mandarin, and
Cantonese Language Subtitles. There are also screen specific commentaries, which
feature The Rock on one and Director Kevin Bray, Director Of Photography Glen
MacPherson, and Editor George Bowers on the other.
Extra value features include three
letterboxed deleted scenes and one alternate ending (1:21). The deleted scenes
can be viewed individually or as one reel and are all less than a minute in
length. There is also a blooper reel (: 48), and a featurette on the stunts
hosted by The Rock entitled “Fight The Good Fight” (8:40). The film’s
theatrical trailer is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2:08) while the other
trailers and promos are all presented in a letterboxed aspect ratio that
includes “Soul Plane” (1:32), “Bullet Proof Monk” (1:51), “Dark
Blue” (1:37), “Out Of Time” (1:41), “Men Of Action” and a videogame TV
spot for “Everything Or Nothing” (: 30). In addition there is a teaser
trailer for “Species III” (1:28) and an EPK on the upcoming straight to
video sequel (5:20). The main menu is animated with motion transitions to
standard interactive still frames and all are easy to navigate.
“Walking Tall” will debut on
DVD-Video at retailers on and offline from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Home
Entertainment on Tuesday, September 28, 2004.
