In 1969 Henry N.
Beard and Douglas C. Kenney publish a short novel through Signet for Harvard
Lampoon entitled Bored Of The Rings. The observation made by many at this
time when J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings was experiencing great
sales through baby boomer readers was the question, “What does The Lord Of
The Rings” lack?” and the answer was sex. For the recent theatrical film
adaptations of the renowned trilogy Peter Jackson wisely developed
relationships and in some cases changed some of the character action roles in
order to bring an element of romance that otherwise was largely left in the
appendences within The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. In
doing so Jackson along with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh added to the drama
and made the films more accessible for women since there was a time when fantasy
on both the big and small screen had long been more or less male oriented wish
fulfillment. Executive Producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert also were quick to
spot the appeal of fantasy adventures where the heroes were women and their Hercules:
The Legendary Journeys spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess became more
popular than the series that spawned it.

Now in the early
twenty-first century at a time when both mainstream Hollywood and the Adult Film
Industry appears to be obsessed with remaking movies that are twenty or more
years old, the folks at Top Of The Food Chain Incorporated have taken the idea
of adult fantasy with a mix of humor to the next step with their video on demand
series WhoreLore: SWORDS, SORCERY AND SEX otherwise simply known as WhoreLore.
Adult Film Stars and real life couple Dez and Staci AKA Alaura Eden have taken
what in the world of the Adult Entertainment Industry might be considered A list
talent and created a developing mix of action, monsters, and hardcore sex that
never takes it itself too seriously and gives fans something a little different
from what they’ve seen before.

The storyline is
thin in part because I get the impression the producers are still finding their
footing in terms of defining exactly what Whorecraft is about. An ancient
evil has been resurrected and brought with it control over men, beasts, demons,
and monsters in an attempt to enslave the free people of the land whose only
hope lies in the diligence of the Whores, gallant women whose skill in sword and
sorcery is only matched by their sexual prowess. The penalty for failure in
WhoreLore is humiliation and even death, but it doesn’t take much to guess
what the rewards are. WhorecLore features some great outdoor sex scenes
that feature top-notch talent like Monica Mayhem, Mia Rose, Jessica Jaymes,
Shyla Stylze, Nadia Nyce, Mindy Lee, Lisa Marie, and in a cameo as a green
skinned goblin woman Taylor Rain. A number of male stars as well as
behind-the-scenes Adult Entertainment Industry folk make appearances usually in
hapless cameos for the most part. It appears that the only guys getting lucky in
these films are same guys who always get lucky in adult films though I’m not
familiar enough with the male stars to say I am a hundred percent correct.

There are a few
shortcomings (no pun intended) to WhoreLore that hopefully will be
ironed out as the series goes into its second season. The first season is
comprised of six episodes that run anywhere from nearly 11 minutes to
approximately 28 minutes. Due to the modest budget of the series, some of the
costuming particularly for the men is not quite as authentic as the costumes the
women wear. It could simply be that there is more heavy metal out there for
women than men, but sometimes the limits as well as some of the on location
shooting takes one out of the fantasy world when the viewer should be totally
into it. The best locations used are on a beach as well as what doubles as
castle of sorts in episode 5. The other problem with the series is that the
characters are simply flat. Basically if you have seen any of these women in
other adult films and have gotten a sense of their onscreen persona from their
previous films, you pretty much know what to expect here. Sometimes it is not a
hindrance, but if you are not familiar with the players and really don’t get a
sense of what the drama is then these short episodes become little more than
porn stars playing dress up and for a series to survive even in adult cinema,
you have to care about the people you are watching or else you’ll go elsewhere
and now more than ever adult video on demand is highly competitive and many
people already just download low resolution free clips or watch free streaming
video.

What would be great
is if the producers could discover some new female stars and develop the stories
for them so that even if they are not the best actresses, at least they can
develop fans that will then come back for more just to see them in action as
their characters. The stories also need to include a trailer tease for the next
episode even if it means a longer time for season two to premiere as well as a
completely developed story arc should be done by professional writers or those
experienced with writing adult films and with produced credits since they know
better what this industry needs in terms of telling a story with sex than the
average screenwriter. Personally I say make the sex scenes further the plot and
define the characters rather than just having them because it is an adult
production. There should be some real cliffhanger endings too.

Technically, the
makeup is pretty good especially for the women and in particular the nymph like
female elves, the male dwarf, and Taylor Rain’s green goblin that inevitably
will call to mind the Orion slave girls seen in Star Trek. Dez as a
director knows how to capture the natural curves of a woman’s body to
perfection on camera and he also has some well choreographed action scenes too
as well as one very funny segment where one hooded figure just turns around and
runs away leaving his master to confront a sexy demon played by Jessica Jaymes.
The editing is very good as well and while the special effects are not ILM, no
one is expecting them to be and compared to some late night films shown on
premium channels like Showtime and Cinemax, the overall tone of the series is
smarter and more entertaining with better effects too. At the very least I was
pleased to see that there was no retarded overacting common with softcore adult
films shown on cable.

WhoreLore is
gaining national attention in the mainstream media with profiles on G4 as
well as such magazines as PC Gamer, Electronic Gaming, People, and Penthouse.
The creators are adventure and video game fans hence the inspiration to create
the series. The image quality of the episodes I screened was about on par with
premium Internet video on demand though there was an audio drop out in episode 1
and this viewer could not manually download the first season finale at the time
of this online publication.
