“Wipeout Pure” was the first UMD game I saw for the Sony PSP at a locale video game store in my neighborhood. The manager gave me a demo and I was hooked. I love racing games and I love anything futuristic so “Wipeout Pure” was perfect for me. The graphics are outstanding and the animation is fluid. Starting up with a profile, choosing your vehicle of choice, and then deciding whether you wish to participate in either a single race, tournament, time trial, or free play couldn’t be easier and the game play is exciting. Once you get the hang of it, using the joystick and buttons on the PSP console itself will feel more natural than most game controllers for set top systems. A very cool feature is the ability to have up to 8 players participate in a race at the same time through the Wi-Fi Ad Hoc Mode. One player must host a multiplayer game in order to use this feature and once a race begins, new players cannot join the race. Eight different kinds of ships are available to choose from and they have a sleek look to them that is somewhat reminiscent of the designs of futurist Syd Mead and there are also 12 new tracks created for this version of the game along with 4 classic “Wipeout Pure” runs. The 25-page instruction booklet is well written and easy to digest.

Content can be saved on a Memory Stick Duo™ with at least 450 kilobytes available. “Wipeout Pure” is one of my favorite games and it is available now for the Sony PSP on UMD at retailers on and offline courtesy of Sony Computer Entertainment.
