Among fans of the TV series
“Xena: Warrior Princess,” Season Three is considered the best overall
collection of 22 episodes from the show’s six consecutive seasons. Perhaps for
this reason as well as others, Anchor Bay Entertainment’s DVD box set of
“Xena: Warrior Princess Season Three” is the most comprehensive collection
to be released so far. In addition to presenting the entire season in newly
remastered digital transfers that preserve the series’ (1.33:1) broadcast
aspect ratio and are by far the best looking “Xena” disc collection yet, all
22 episodes are also presented with full English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Sound mixes and thus watching “Xena: Warrior Princess” on DVD is even better
experience than when the episodes first aired on syndicated broadcast network
television.
The extra features are found
throughout the entire nine-disc set. On disc one there is a season three
production photo gallery and a web link to the official site. Actors Lucy
Lawless, Hudson Leick, Renee O’Connor, and Ted Raimi, Creator Executive
Producer Rob Tapert, Executive Producers/Writers R.J. Stewart, and Steven L.
Sears, Cinematographer Donald Duncan, Set Designer Robert Gillies, and Director
Oley Sassone participate in exclusive episode length audio commentaries and as
with previous TV on DVD sets distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment, optional
video commentaries, which are essentially abridged versions of the select
episode length audio commentary tracks where the viewer can see as well as hear
the speakers, are included. The participants for the video commentaries include
Actors Lucy Lawless, Hudson Leick, Renee O’Connor, and Ted Raimi, Creator
Executive Producer Rob Tapert, Executive Producers/Writers R.J. Stewart, and
Steven L. Sears, and Producer Elizabeth Friedman. I prefer the video option to
the audio commentary because it touches upon some of the more important or
interesting facets behind the various season three episodes, though hardcore
fans will definitely appreciate the full-length audio commentary counterparts
and I support and applaud the series producers and Anchor Bay Entertainment for
giving consumers the choice.
Other extra features include a
thirty-minute retrospective documentary on the acclaimed season three episode
“Sacrifice – Part I & II,” a blooper reel, and a CD-ROM containing
Actor, Director, and Writer biographies, a series trivia game, and the “Xena
Chronicles,” which is an interactive guidebook to the characters encountered
in season three complete with video clips, biographies, and photos. Also on the
CD-ROM are a production design sketch gallery, Director’s Notes, Storyboards,
and more.
As a whole “Xena: Warrior
Princess: Season Three Nine-Disc Collector’s Edition” DVD box set is proof
that these DVD-Video collections keep getting better and better with each
successive season release and is well worth picking up when it debuts at
retailers on and offline on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 from Anchor Bay
Entertainment.
