Billy
The Kid is regarded as both a character of infamy and as a folk hero, but more
than a century after his time, I think it is easiest to acknowledge that he has
become apart of American mythology. “Young Guns” was released at a time when
Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Charlie Sheen were
associated more as feature film stars rather than the working actors who have
found some career highlights as of late on television, whether it be on made for
cable features or network broadcast dramas and sitcoms. What struck me while
watching “Young Guns” again on this new “Special Edition” DVD was just
how young some of the cast looked back then. I was a teenager when “Young
Guns” was released theatrically and back then they all seemed older to me
because they were and still are, but now well into my thirties, some of these
guys look like kids to me now. “Young Guns” is not a fantastic western, but
it is far from a bad one if you take it for what it is, I think “Young Guns”
can be pretty entertaining. It is interesting to note that “Young Guns” and
its sequel came out just before there was an brief interest in Hollywood on
resurrecting the Western genre for feature film release after the Oscar®
winning successes of “Dances With Wolves” and “Unforgiven.” I doubt that
if the films were released a few years later that they would have been any
better because this was filmed during the prime of the casts’ youth, but the
first film did good box office so who knows for sure?
As
Billy The Kid, Emilio Estevez plays the character with a touch of zest that
reveals the rather sociopath behavior of the character as he presents it and at
times he makes the film quite enjoyable with some dark humor. His scene with a
then unknown Bruce Greenwood is easily one of the most memorable in the film. A
cast of supporting seasoned actors like Jack Palance, Terence Stamp, Terry
O’Quinn, and Brian Keith appear in the film. Patrick Wayne plays Pat Garrett
in the film. William Peterson too over the role for the sequel.
Packaged
in a sleeve with glossy photos and brief character blurbs that houses the
standard DVD keep case, Artisan Home Entertainment presents “Young Guns”
with an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio. The transfer is a little
soft, but free of anomalies and debris. A nice new English DTS Digital 5.1
Theatrical Surround Soundtrack has been included and it is a vast improvement
over the original Dolby Stereo Surround Soundtrack, which is also included on
the DVD. An English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack coupled with English
Closed Captions for the hearing impaired and Spanish Language Subtitles are also
provided as options. Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko
provide an amusing retrospective feature length audio commentary track for the
film and there is also a text commentary with trivia and anecdotes related to
the film. Casey Siemaszko also provides a nice thank you note within the booklet
filled with liner notes related to the content of the DVD.
A
documentary exploring the historical background of Billy The Kid (30:55) and the
theatrical trailer (1:23) wrap up the extra features on this DVD along with
bonus trailers for “Frank Herbert’s Dune: Director’s Cut” (2:08),
“Reservoir Dogs” (2:08), “The Rambo Trilogy” (1:43), and “Total
Recall” (2:09). The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy
to navigate.
