FANGORIA BLOOD DRIVE
Koch Vision to Release Winning Horror Shorts on DVD
Aspiring Filmmakers Across America Provided Overwhelming
Response to the FIRST EVER Search for Horror’s Next Star Directors
New York, NY (January 21, 2004) — The deadline for submissions to the Fangoria Blood Drive has passed and all of the spine-tingling, hair-raising and blood-curdling entries have been collected for the first-ever nationwide search for the Best Short Horror Film. Koch Vision and the Starlog Group, publisher of Fangoria Magazine, joined forces last Fall to invite aspiring American horror filmmakers to submit original short-form genre films. The judges, who were carefully selected and meticulously trained to withstand hours of slashings, stalkings and other terrors, have finished reviewing all submissions.
The winning entries, which were judged on creativity, commerciality and technical merit, were announced on December 31, 2003. BC Furtney, of Los Angeles, CA, won the award for Best Film for Mr. Eryams. Patrick Rea and Ryan Jones, of Lawrence, KS, earned the award for Best Comedy for A Man and His Finger. Rea also earned the award for Most Frightening for his solo submission, Disturbances. The Hitch, created by Drew Rist of Dallas, TX, received the Palm d’Gore. Christopher P. Garetano, of Northport, NY, won Best Avant Garde Horror for his submission, Inside. Awards also went to Song of the Dead, created by Chip Gubera, for Best Musical and to Shadows of the Dead, created by Joel Robertson of Lakeland, FL, for Best Editing. Specimen earned an Honorable Mention for Achievement in Special Effects.
"It has been an amazing thrill shepherding this short film search with our friends at Koch," Fangoria editor and Blood Drive producer Tony Timpone says. "From the likes of what I've seen, Fangoria's readers are an awesome group of creative, talented and impressive film artists. Look out, Hollywood!"
After the announcement was made in September, entrants of all ages and levels of expertise began recruiting vampires, zombies and serial killers to create the bloodiest, scariest and the most bone-chilling short films in time for the November 30th deadline. The contest website, www.fangoriablooddrive.com, has been updated and current contest news is featured. A selection of highlights from the winning shorts were featured at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors convention on January 9, 2004.
Tim Hinsley, project creator and executive producer, said "The creativity shown in these films was overwhelming and the choices were very difficult. I want to thank all of the directors, actors, musicians and crew for all of their hard work in making these films."
Koch Vision will showcase the winning films in a worldwide DVD release, scheduled for Spring 2004, which will be hosted by famed musician and horror-film auteur Rob Zombie. The DVD will also feature a collection of extras that will prove an invaluable inspiration to any aspiring horror filmmaker, including featurettes on the studios of special effects wizard Stan Winston and the gallery of legendary author/artist/director Clive Barker. The DVD will be compiled and the features produced by the noted independent video company, Longview Entertainment.
January 23, 2004 - Here are TV reviews for upcoming brand new episodes of the Cartoon Network's original series "Ed, Edd N Eddy" and "Teen Titans" as well as the premiere of the new anime series "Witch Hunter Robin." In Addition I have published a review for the Sci-Fi Channel's original movie "Dragon Storm," which will premiere on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at 9PM (ET/PT). In other TV news, the USA Network will team up with Dean Koontz, Martin Scorsese and Marcus Nispel to reinvent "Frankenstein." Read all about it in the press release below!
Los Angeles, CA – January 21, 2004 – USA Network has ordered production for Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein. It was announced today by Jeff Wachtel, USA’s executive vice president, series and longform. Pre-production has commenced on the two-hour pilot for an event series.
Frankenstein
is written and executive produced by international best-selling author Dean
Koontz (Odd Thomas, The Face, Sole Survivor)
who has sold nearly three hundred million books over the course of his career.
Six time
Academy® Award nominee Martin Scorsese (Gangs
of New York, Goodfellas,
Raging Bull, Taxi Driver) will
executive produce along with Tony Krantz’s Flame Television (24,
Sports Night, Wonderland,
Felicity).
Marcus
Nispel, one of today’s most inventive and creative contemporary directors,
will direct the project. Nispel’s re-make of the cult classic, The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a number-one box office hit. He will soon direct
the upcoming feature film Need
starring Diane Lane.
“It's
amazing to have this creative team in the same room, let alone working for us on
a project of this scope,” said Jeff Wachtel.
“I have always loved the idea of re-thinking classic stories as
contemporary ‘urban myths’ -- and we are thrilled that Frankenstein will
come to life in the hands of these gifted artists.”
"This
is a dream project. Dean has written a new vision – a brilliant script which
has caught the attention of filmmakers like Marty and Marcus," said Tony
Krantz. "It’s hard to imagine a more compelling group of filmmakers
joining forces to bring this to life. The opportunity to work with my good
friend Jeff Wachtel and everyone at USA is an added bonus."
Principal photography is scheduled
to begin in April in Los Angeles. The
project was packaged by Endeavor, who represent Dean Koontz, Martin Scorsese and
Marcus Nispel.

January 12, 2004 - LATER UPDATE - Here are more definitive specs on Warner Home Video's "The Matrix Revolutions" gathered from the press conference. Warner Home Video did confirm that trailers for all three films will be on "The Matrix Revolutions" DVD and the DVD is being produced by Eric Matthies, who has produced the previous "Matrix" DVDs. Warner Home Video declined to comment on any future "Special Edition" releases for these films other than to say that WHV is working with the Wachowski Brothers to bring their creative vision to the fans. There will be a 45 day pay per view window and while the DVD will be priced to sell, the VHS will be priced for rental only. It was asked if a fourth film will be produced and WHV replied that there are no plans at this time, but there will be a massive multiplayer online game due for release in 2004. This game will continue the story from where "The Matrix Revolutions" left off. The extra features on the DVD are not going to be 16 by 9 enhanced (Unfortunately). The discs will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, but no DTS Soundtrack option. The version being released onto DVD will be the same one worldwide coded for specific regions so no country will have a copy of "The Matrix Revolutions" on DVD with any exclusive content not found elsewhere. Here are the specifications below:

Ed, Edd n Eddy Ed's Day Off Marathon on Monday, January 19, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
