September 13, 2004 - Here is my DVD review of Warner Home Video's "THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut." Over the weekend I checked out "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" at a local theater and I have to note that it exceeded my expectations as a sequel. My initial reaction based on the TV spots and the scene that appears on Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment's "Resident Evil Deluxe Edition" DVD was one of trepidation because the impression I got was that the story was going to be told as a total flashback. Well I am happy to state that "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" is not a flashback, but instead picks up right where the first film left off and even fills in a few blanks between the two films. While "Resident Evil" focused more on horror, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" was a balls to the wall mix of action and sci-fi with elements and characters from the game series making their appearances throughout. At this point both "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" are now the two best films ever to be produced based on a videogame, which in itself is quite an achievement since most films based on videogames generally suck. Writer and Director Paul W.S. Anderson provided the screenplay for "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and if he should feel somewhat frustrated by the way the theatrical version of "Alien Vs. Predator" turned out, I hope he will take some comfort in the success of both of his "Resident Evil" film adaptations. I am pretty sure that "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" will be the number one film for this past weekend and will be considered a hit like the first film by the time all the box office and eventual DVD sales receipts are counted. Now Mr. Anderson, how about an unrated expanded version of "Event Horizon" on DVD?
